Title: Music
Post by: 1701E on February 18, 2010, 01:51:30 PM
After some recent posts about music (I use that term loosely in some cases) I started to wonder, what do people around here like?  Serenity's music thread showed what some like and the "Free-style" thread, clearly, showed what most do not like.

Personally I can listen to most anything, and do listen to most anything.  Just some things I have in WMP are:
>Classical (Beethoven, Chopin, Mozart, and so on)
>Then from the 50s-80s (Elvis, Bobby Darin, Huey Lewis, Beetles, Pink Floyd, Doors, Rolling Stones, Skynyrd, Zeppelin, The Who, Dire Straights, Iron Maiden and so on)
>Newer music in just about every category (Breaking Benjamin, Bon Jovi [ok he falls in two ages], NIN, Metallica [again, two ages], Coheed & Cambria, David Cook, Daughtry, Disturbed, Maroon 5, Sevendust, SOAD, Hollywood Undead, Weird Al, and so on)

I am not picky in music, as long as it not "Heavy" rap, "heavy" country, "heavy" metal or any extreme ("heavy") really I can listen to it.  So what is the majority of music listened to here?  Have a feeling there will be a large majority with music from the 80s and back...old geezers. :D

80's?  Kids.

Try the 60's.  That was a great decade in music.  That was rock-n-roll.  Oh yeah.

I like classical as well.  The Wife and I are going to listen to the Dallas Symphony do Pink Floyd in a couple of weeks.  Should be interesting.

I listen to it all, aslong as its good. So in conclusion, i listen to good music and thats final.

People who limit themselfs to one category of music only, needs to get out of puberty. Like "Im a hardrocker" "Im a Hip Hoper" etc etc only shows your maturity level.

60's?  Relic. :P
If I had resources to get everything I listened to more then half would be from the 50's-late 70's followed by Classical then newer music.  I just can't limit myself to one type of music.  If one day I get all the music I would like, it would fill my HDD a few times over and would exceed the post character limit (up to about 200 bands/artists/composers right now). :)

Being a musician has given me an appreciation of all music that is weel done, but that doesnt mean I like it all, at the moment I have two cd's in high rotation at home, one is The Black Crows greatest hits the other is Blood Sugar Sex Magic by the Red Hot Chille Peppers. Aquick scan of my collection shows Muddy Waters, SRV, Mettalica, Hill Top Hoods, The Infectious Grooves and Johnny Winter all near the top of the pile which means they've been played recently. So in summing up, I guess I'm into raucus guitars.

I'm a pretty big music fan, and I hi-fi audio nut (wish my wallet could support my hi-fi desires though :)).  I listen to a little of everything at some point.  As I've posted in other threads recently I've really gotten into several smaller acts in the last few years.  Guys that you can go see at a club for $10-$20 a show and shake hands with after the fact.  There are some immensely talented musicians out there that go relatively unnoticed.

To reiterate a few that I've posted on recently. All of which can generally be classified under the broad Rock 'N Roll label;

Alejandro Escovedo
http://www.alejandroescovedo.com/ (http://www.alejandroescovedo.com/)

Chuck Prophet
http://chuckprophet.com/news/ (http://chuckprophet.com/news/)

Jon Dee Graham
http://www.jondeegraham.com/ (http://www.jondeegraham.com/)

Joe Strummer & The Mescalero's
http://www.strummerville.com/ (http://www.strummerville.com/)

The Fireman (actually this is Paul McCartney's latest project)
http://www.thefiremanmusic.com/home (http://www.thefiremanmusic.com/home)

On the more Alternative/Insurgent Country side I enjoy

Uncle Tupelo
http://gumbopages.com/uncle-tupelo.html

Old '97's
http://www.old97s.com/ (http://www.old97s.com/)

Son Volt
http://www.sonvolt.net/ (http://www.sonvolt.net/)

Waco Brothers
http://wacobrothers.com/wb/ (http://wacobrothers.com/wb/)

I'm sure if I sat here I could probably keep the list going hehe, actually curious to see if/how many other people around here are cursed with the same affliction that got me. :)

I love music in general, but I have a lot of trouble finding people that I can share my tastes with and exchange preferences. I mean, it's a bit hard to find people who like Techno/Electronic/DnB/Whatever-The-Frak-That-Record-I-Pulled-Out-Of-My-Dad's-Record-Collection-Was. I mean, North Kansas City is not known for its open minded people. Dang Top 40 folk. I don't mind those songs and would be a lot more accepting if they would get their heads out of their collective posteriors and realize that not all good music has to be in the Top 40.

The Newgrounds Audio Portal has been very beneficial to me.
My most recent acquisitions include: Breathe Carolina, Owl City, Daft Punk, The Ventures, and Approaching Nirvana (http://www.youtube.com/user/ApproachingNirvana).

 True the 60's did have the greatest band to ever walk the face of the earth....The Beatles.  IMO there will never be another musical group that can top The Beatles.  Now as a generation, the 70's had the best music.  I love Skynyrd, Zeppelin, The Eagles, Aerosmith (they could be 70s 80s 90s or 2000s  :O).  The 80s sucked with the exception of metallica, Bon Jovi, Motley Crue and other one hit wonder hair-metal bands.  The 90s sucked period. and modern music sucks.   :furious

IMHO the order of the top 4 greatest bands of all time goes like this
1. without a doubt The Beatles
2. Aerosmith
3. Lynyrd Skynyrd
4. and #4 is a tie between Zeppelin and Bon Jovi.

*again this is my personal opinion, if you disagree with my favorite bands thats fine.   :rock :rock

I like to think of myself as a Music Lover. Where most people have a favorite genre and mainly listen to music in that category, I listen to every and all forms of music. From stuff as heavy as Metal, to stuff more calm like Classical, from Punk rock to Techno/Trance, and yes even some RAP. I'm not a particularly big fan of RAP, but some songs are ok. I just love music!

I enjoy the majority of rock & roll music (especially heavily blues influenced rock) from the 1950's-1980... I don't really care much for hair metal (actually I hate hair metal with a passion) or a lot of the stuff that came after it. I do like Maiden and AC/DC and a lot of Judas Priest though. I also listen to straight blues some... I like Bob Dylan, particularly pre-motorcycle accident... among other artists from a range of styles. However that's the stuff I like to listen to the majority of the time.

I have a vast array of likes when it comes to music....more if I like it, I like...I have no preference to any particular genre.....I do however have a leaning towards a  bit of drum and beats with violin over the top....much like how rappers do it except my rapper is a violin.

things like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMQMpUJpoi0&feature=related

Oh yeah and I'm really liking these guys at present...well have for a while, but this song in particular

Been listening to a lot of Gogol Bordello lately, and a slightly old band called Neutral Milk Hotel, oh, and the Magnetic Fields.  Brilliant stuff.

I really don't like top 40 stuff in the slightest, and I despise a lot of it.

Been working on a scale of music suckage lately, gonna call it the Bolton Scale.  It'll be graduated 1 to 10 and have decimal points to the tenth.  A really bad song, so bad that it just becomes funny that is sucks so bad would be in the 7.0 to 8.0 range.  So bad it makes you angry (or is a Nickelback songs) is 8.0 to 9.0 range.   You get the idea.  A perfect 10 is only a theoretical level of suck, like absolute zero is a theoretical level of cold.

It could still use some flushing out, and anyone who wants is welcome to chip in and help.  It's a public domain idea says me!

Any random Celine Dion song will rank just about 8.5 Boltons.  See how that works, it's great!

Since seeing the last music video of Lady Gaga "Bad Romance" I got traumatized enough to never listen to this kind of music ever again (top 10 popular radio kind of stuff).

I'm a new musician so I discovered a lot of new genres and styles lately. But I stick to listening to a mix of:

Classical (mostly Tchaikovsky) and Movie/Trailer (John Williams/James Horner) songs;
House/Electro/Trance (Klass, Deadmau5, Juno Reactor, etc.);
2000-2005 rock(Jimmy Eat World,Celldweller,etc);
Not really much into Rap or HipHop because sadly, my English is not good enough to understand most of what is said;
Latin...I'm learning Salsa dance so its fun to link both;
Jazz/blues... hmm, hard to say, there some real good classics there but i'm too young to taste it like some of you do.
Don't listen to techno, pop, hardcore (except a couple of Michael Jackson's) as they lack pieces reaching all the way down your spine or makes you want to "go with the flow".

That sums it up I guess...  :aok

Obviously I love Megadeth, but I got my kitschy side too... I love 80's synth pop like:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jt-R5hj_lWM&feature=related
(funny aside I can't STAND the Bowie song of the same nature)

I can't listen to anything "top 40" or pop since the early 90's basically.

I still love Zeppelin as much or more than Megadeth, and have a lot of "classic rock" from the 70's.

I like old classic country, Hank Sr., Conway Twitty, Cash, things like that.

I even like lounge music, and jazz...

Listen to "Diaspora" on this page:

Anyone know where I can find more like that?

My colletion of around 2000 cd's has almost every type of music except for country, religious and swedish dansband (sorry maniac :D) Ive been into different kinds of music from early teens and up to now. Right now I find myself listening alot to bands like NOFX, Rancid, Decendents, Pennywise, Dead Kennedys, Green Day and a few more. I try to get in atleast one hour of music enjoyment every day in my favorite spot.

I love music and thankfully the missus has no problem with that :)

I have always loved that Peter Schilling song, it's great.   That Diaspora is not too bad, sort of a jazz/lounge with a hair of techno mixed in, not sure where you'd get more of that though.  If you dig some lounge music, check out Richard Cheese, he's like the all time king of lounge jazz song covers, great stuff.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBOpk33VlSg

As for the Megadeath, I liked them really well right up until they put out Symphony of Destruction.  That was like Metallica's Black album to me, marking the exact place where they totally went to crap.

Hes been around for awhile now, they take alot of "popular" music and perform them in a lounge setting.

Any classic punk fans here?  I've been listening to the Clash's "D.O.A." a lot recently.  It's mostly demos and live stuff from around the time of their first album and it's pretty great.
It's aimed more at the completists as it has multiple versions of the same songs and some studio chatter but some real interesting stuff.

You can see also how some songs were built from the ground up as some of the early versions don't have the backing vocals the finished versions have.  But all of the demos here can stand on their own, highly recommended for the Clash fan.

Richard Cheese is absolutely fantastic.  I enjoy a wide variety myself, and he certainly makes my list.

Also, since every thread about music on this BBS ultimately results in god knows how many "rap isn't real music" statements (and I agree for the most part) I feel obliged to submit to the quorum the following:

Shiv, if you like the Clash, you'll probably like that Gogol Bordello.   They're what Joe Strummer would be if he's been raised as an eastern European Gypsy.  It's good stuff!

Phatzo, you're the first person I've seen bring up Infectious Grooves in a long while man.  I always dug them quite a lot.  And Zappa, well, that man was a genius.

Way to go on the Infectious Grooves ref man, brought a smile to my face.
