ok. since i bought my p-38, and all of the r/c related threads lately, i went and started prepping my r/c air force for service in a few weeks. i may have run into a couple snags though.

 my twinstar hasn't been up in about 3 years, and my world models t-34 hasn't been up in about 2 years. the twinstar has a pair of os .25FX's. the t-34 has an os .50SX.
 i love my os engines. the problem i ran into though, is that although i thought i "pickled" them properly(i was told that putting a few drops of mobil1 down the carb, spin the engine by hand, then cover the carb. inlet), the 25's not only are very difficult to turn by hand, but the barrel in the carb is stuck shut.
 the 50 in the t34 was very tight, but freed up pretty quickly....but it feels very rough, as if the bearings are gone. this engine probably only has about 20 hours of flight time on it, as i installed it new in this plane. the 25's in the twinstar, probably only about 8 to 10 hours, since a rebuild before installing them in that plane.

so........as i don't know much about these engines......what am i looking at for repairs, if any? as in will it be worth repairing them, or more cost efficient to simply replace em?

 on the good side, the 1.20 in my icepoint seems perfect(although i'm more than likely gonna sell that plane rather than fly it), the os .91FX in my world models extra 300 is perfect, the os.50SX in my hangar 9 t34 is perfect, the os.50SXH in my raptor is perfect, and the ys(i think) 1.5 4 stroke in my p51 is perfect.

 can yas tell that i'm tryin to rush the summer to friggin get here FAST?  :D

You could tear them down to check, but there are other home remedies you might also try.

For myself, I'd probably just soak them in something like marvel mystery oil for a while, then run some natural oil fuel through them for a first run.  If they seize, it's an excuse to buy new ones...

Or seafoam.  Seafoam will loosen up a block that's been sitting in the bottom of the Pacific for 60 years.

I would break them down.  Buy some rebuild kits and replace the seals.  There i sure to be jellied fuel mucking up the nooks and crannies.  Even if you break it free, the chunks of gunk can cause the engine to run weird.

So, I vote for breaking them down and doing a good clean.  Plus it'll give you a chance to spot any serious corrosion if it is in there.

Consider the number of hours put into building the planes, and the hours of enjoyment they give you.  Isn't it worth the time to do a good clean and inspection on the engines?  If it were a real plane, you wouldn't try to take a short cut....

I'm with Dave on this one.  I would also break them down.  Check the bearings, i love O.S. too, but they are kinda notorious for using cheap bearings.  Also, use ATF for the after run oil, works perfect.  Hope you get em goin ok.  Nothing more frustrating than one of these little buggers not wanting to act right.  I have been fighting with a GMS .25 and am about to use it for a tee-ball.  Welp, happy flyin'! :salute :cheers:

i have a corsair by alpha models, a t28 trojan, and a tigershark ducted fan. they're all electric.


tomorrow's reserved for disassembly of one of the os engines......... :aok

I've always used brake cleaner, or similar cleaner i just take off the back plate give it a good wash down, it dries in minutes then i would drop some 3 in 1 oil on the moving parts (just a drop here and there) as far as the head , remove the plug, wash the inside for a few sec's let it dry, drop or two of 3and1, should be good to go Ive done this for along time, it's something i learned from grandpa back in the 80's

ive been thinking about getting an EDF, cause i want somethin real fast. I saw an F117 EDF w/ retracts and everything in it for 250...including a working bomb bay and bombs that drop!

Not all EDF's are all that fast, some are actually quite slow.

If you are looking for a small EDF that is cheap, and is quite a performer, check out the EF-16 by Phase3, or the Squall, also by phase 3.  Neat thing about the squall is, they have a vectored thrust unit for it! 3D with a  jet is quite fun!  On the squall, there is a version for a 3 cell lipo, and one made for a 4 cell.  The 4 cell plane flies a lot faster, but more importantly (for a vectored thrust model) it has unlimited vert.  I fly the EF-16, and my 4 cell squall, all winter long, even in the cold and snow.. keeps the RC addiction fed during the off season LOL!
(any question about the "speed" of the EF-16, can ask anyone that was @ dayton gathering last year, i flew mine @ the campsite..... had to play dodge the tree, and land under a volleyball net!  Mine has been esitmated (known distnce timing) at approximately 105 MPH in level flight.... so for a small jet it is no slouch.

I use RTV on the backplate and at the base of the carb for all my engines.
A little dab will do you fine though. Marvel mystery oil is also good for them.
