Just a question, but were aircraft shot down reguarly by the 5 inch guns on CV's in the war?
-
Nine of them were last night by me. :D
-
They were a ships primary anti aircraft weapon.
I don't think they were just for show.
Especially after they perfected the proximity fuse for it.
Must be something to them. U.S. Navy still uses the 5" gun mount today.
-
It was something like 1 kill for every 1000rds fired. AAA can't keep a ship safe on its own, planes will make it through.

I'm sure you have a link to backup this claim .

I don't have a link, but its in my thread about changing the sights for the 5", and Ack-Ack agrees.
You are correct about the 1 kill per 1,000 rounds fired using the Mark 37 Gun Fire Control System.

Because we all know Ack-Ack knows everything, saw everything, and has done everything...

He knows a well flown tbm can kick a poorly flown 109's rear all over the sky. :D

Well it's not him...
Nor is that statement at ALL relevant to the thread.
And for the record, that wasn't an insult to Ack-Ack, that was a dig at nemesis for citing ack-acks agreement as though it immediately proved something was true.
-
It wasn't. PM'd him asking for a link, and haven't gotten a response.

Here's an interesting article, I would imagine that figuring out which gun delivered the killing blow would be very difficult when you have so many shooting but it should be a good read.

Here is a Link showing AAA kills by Year/Ship Type/Rounds Expended-to-Kill Ratio, etc.
www.history.navy.mil/.../antiaircraft_action_summary_wwii.htm
Just an example as to how ridiculously accurate AH AA is-
This is a total from 1942 in the Pacific only for 5" Com
Rounds Fired-15,110
Kills-60
R.P.B.(Rounds Per Bird)-252
Total from later in the War (with Proxy Fuses)-
1945-
Rounds-108,516
Kills-173
R.P.B.-627
So next time someone says there is nothing wrong with ack, laugh at them and tell them to to check out this link!

Nor were the pilots in WWII, that did attack ships, anywhere near as stupid as the majority of those in AH that attack the ships. If I am in a 5 inch gun, I can pretty much clear the skys if they are 1k-2k AGL and flying for all intents and purposes straight at the boat. Also, you very rarely see a coordinated multi-plane JABO attack in AH. Get 8-10 F6Fs or P-38s or P-47 to all dive on a CV at the same time ... it will be toast and the majority of the attackers will survive.
T'was not the case in WWII ... they used steep dive angles and used multiple planes on attack. Had they dribbled in on the convoy in 1s or 2s at low altitude and shallow dive angles ... those numbers would be a lot different.
Trying to compare those types of WWII stats vs AH stats is an exercise in futility.

Read about the Mark 37 Gun Fire Control System and the Mark 12 5"/38 caliber gun that is was used for and then come and tell me I'm wrong.
You shouldn't really make any comments considering you're the little twit that tried to tell a Hell of a whopper about 2 pineapples, a pocket knife and a missing back pack.

You haven't sent me a PM asking for any sort of link.

Another mission thwarted eh? It amazes me with the 50+ between 5-6 squads working together, they still find time to make it "easier".
-
You didn't get it? Srry bout that. Might have left out the "-" in your name, I was playing and opened the game back up as soon as I sent it.
