BTW Karnak, anything on the Comander Max Guedg from the French Air Force?

I take it you titled it "Die Karnak!" to get my attention?  ;)

I have a little info on him:

Squadron Leader Max Guedj, DSO DFC CdeG
pseudonym Jean Maurice (I don't know why he had a pseudonym)
CO 143 Squadron

He was shot down by Fw190s of III./JG5 on January 15, 1945 while leading 143 Squadron in an attack on German shipping in Leirvik fjord.  He was, I believe, flying a Mosquito FB.XVIII 'Tsetse' at the time.

If I dig further I might have more else where.

TY I will need to find a scaner and zoom on the background of a picture. My officer school was named after him, and I recalled that he wreacked avok before being shot down, I just wanted to refresh my memory.

Jean Maurice was probably his real French name. Maybe he changed to look more British? Or it was a necessity of the time, in case he got shot down over enemy lines? (Like escaping Vichy while working for the Resistance).

Generally, if you have been promoted up to Squadron Leader, been given command and awarded the DSO, DFC and CdeG, its a pretty good sign that you were doing something right.  His rank, position and medals certainly indicate that he wreaked havoc.

I am guessing that the pseudonym had to do with protecting him if he were shot down behind enemy lines.

My stuff shows 143 flying FB VI from 10.44 until 6.45 when (after being disbanded for a year) they became 14 squadron flying  B XVI's.

The jan 15th Leirvik attack seems to have lost 6 of  16 attacking Mossies (carrying bombs and rockets). A MkXVIII  apparantly "saw off" a 190 this XVIII will have come from 248 squadron who  shared the raid.

Attacking were 6 MKVI's from 143, 4 XVIII(tetse) from 248, 4 MK VI's of 235 and 2 PR units from 333


15 MK VI's were flown by the French (10/Group de Chasse 1/3 CORSE) in Vietnam in 47.  345 sorties dropped 169,000 pounds of ordinance later returned to operate in Africa until 49.
