Title: Issue with tracer smoke trails....
Post by: chewiex on February 21, 2010, 08:47:27 AM
Just an observation, I have noticed the smoke trails emitting from the tracer rounds in-game, IMO, are going the wrong way.  :huh  :headscratch:

I mean when in level flight, they appear to rise above the canopy/ wing of the firing a/c. When going nose low and firing, they drop below the a/c flight path. Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't it be the opposite? Go nose low and smoke goes up and go nose high and smoke goes down? Motion and physics , crossing of ballistic flight paths and all seem to point out that something is wacky. I noticed this the other day when in F3 mode and it struck me as strange. Has anyone else noticed this?

Just an observation, not noticed on any particular a/c, seem like them all.  :joystick:

can't speak of the nose-low and firing deal, but when a plane is in level flight if firing the smoke would be above the wings as the guns are not actually firing directly ahead, but are pointing slightly up so that the fired rounds' trajectories arc up then back down to a point ahead of the plane, based on where the convergeance is set. Just like when standing on level ground firing a rifle, your sights compensate for distance to target by causing you to elevate the barrel ever so slightly so that your round "falls onto" the target.

As such, as the rounds are fired from your cartoon plane, they actually climb above the flight path of the plane, so the smoke trail is above the wings...

It also depends on speed when level and slow you will be flying at a higher angle of attack so the bullets are shooting up as compared to the direction you plane is traveling, I.E. the gun sight is above you direction of travel, hence the the trail angles up in front of you, and hence when you move it appears to rise.

I rember when I first saw the effect, I also thought something was wrong. When  in a turn fight it is even more pronounced.

For a while, I thought I was being shot at when I saw the smoke as it looked as if I was taking fire from my six. A number of times I turned and pitched to see who was behind me only to find im by myself. :x
