Title: Windows 7 OEM Preinstallation kit (OPK)?
Post by: oboe on February 24, 2010, 12:46:47 AM
Got my 64-bit Win 7 Pro CD for OEMs today in the mail, and on the box it says I must first pre-install the OEM Preinstallation Kit (OPK) and directs me to a microsoft website, where I think I need to download the OPK and image it to a CD and then run the install on the machine I want to install the OS on (my machine currently has Win 7 RC on it).

I went to MS's website and read a little on the OPK - and it looks to me like its more for guys who are building lots of systems for resale.   I just have the one, and am not interested in all the extra hoops to jump through.

Anybody have experience doing this?  I just want to install the GD OS from the CD I got and be done with it.   WHy all the crap about downloading and imaging and pre-installing OPKs?

Before I bought win7. I use their software to see if my system was win7 ready.  It didn't pass kept telling me this or that update was needed.  Installed win7 64 anyway didn't and haven't had any problems.  Mine was a new build.

Remember that the OEM license is really intended for system resellers.  Ignore the "extra hoops" and just install.

agreed!

I had used Win 7 Ult 64 bit since late 2008 ( 1st started beta'ing it ) and really got involved in Jan of 09 and posted to these boards about win7 RC in May 09.. when it went retail Oct'09, I just installed my Windows 7 Ult. 64 bit right over my win7 RC version. The New Installation placed existing files in a folder called ( Windows.old ) and everything works fine.......

edit: some might want to do a thorough Formatting / Re-Formatting of their Hard Drive before installing a fresh copy of   Windows 7 ( or any OS )..I would normally do the same, but had so much good results/ Good Luck with Windows 7 that I just installed it on the existing Windows 7 OS Partition I had on my PC since it is set up as a dual boot system.....

hope this helps......

Basically, what MS is telling you to do is to use the OPK to 'partially install' windows onto a client's computer (the person you would be reselling the computer to).  You can also (if you know what you're doing) install any custom software you'd want to put on their computer at this time as well.  Then, once you sell the computer.. they just turn it on, type in the OEM #, and are good to go.  The disk you purchased would typically be given to them to use for a reinstall should it ever be needed.

NOW, being that you're not reselling the computer (although you're technically supposed to being you bought the OEM version), you don't have to worry about all that.. just install and go like Ghastly said.

This is all good news then, thanks!   I should have time to try it tomorrow - basically just need to backup a few items and then I'll install from the CD over my Win 7 RC install.
