Your questions are somewhat INtriguing young padiwan but I fear the force will soon INtervene in your post.

Akio Toyoda statement......Toyoda, the 53-year-old scion of the Toyota empire, readied testimony apologizing for the problem and acknowledging that the world's largest automaker grew too fast to keep up with safety controls.
"We pursued growth over the speed at which we were able to develop our people and our organization," he said. "I regret that this has resulted in the safety issues described in the recalls we face today, and I am deeply sorry for any accidents that Toyota drivers have experienced."
And you talk about American greed, more like Toyota's greed to control the auto market in America lead to putting safety way behind profits, your whole post is INteresting but flawed

Same reason they got involved in baseball... though Im not sure what the reason is.

Heres the whole Article, Japan is also going after them for the same defects in the same cars in japan, its a engineering flaw. but heres the link http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/35557961/ns/business-us_business (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/35557961/ns/business-us_business)

What really makes me wonder about this whole thing is the interviews and reports of the people who have been in the accidents.
In the only two cases I heard on the news this morning, BOTH people used a cell phone to call either 911 or a family member as the incident was happening. What the heck are these people thinking? How is calling someone going to help the situation, the last thing you need to do is distract yourself while behind the wheel of a run away car.
One incident the lady said she drove 100 mph for over 6 miles, while talking on the phone with her husband! Uhh, hello!? Why don't you hang up and DRIVE the car. She said she thought she was going to die (probably kill someone else too), didn't think her husband could help, but she just wanted to hear his voice. WTF PEOPLE!? This is just ignorant. And has it never occurred to these people that there are several things you can do in a run away car, like use the E-brake, down shift (even in an auto), shift to neutral, or perhaps SHUT OFF THE DAMN CAR!

Toyota values their reputation enough that they are "working on it" - Toyota US chairman (I'm paraphrasing but that's what he said)
Were they required to recall every car they make or try and fix the ones on the line, while settling with the plaintiffs out of court - (real quiet like) which do you think they would choose? Money always factors into these things. Toyota is not on some moral high ground while the greedy American carmakers are the spawn of Satan. Are you heavy into Toyota shares perchance?

Well put AKHOG
And no, I don't own any Toyota stock....but if I had enough cash in the market I would be planning on buying a lot of it very soon. There are very few sure things in this world.

Tool,
Your quoting old toyota statistics.
By their own admission they are no longer on that level. Their safety and quality are no longer near the level they were prior to their huge growth.
If you think it is... please contact the folks who have lost loved ones and explain it all to them. Toyota has known of the issues at hand for some time and chose not to act on the problems till called on the carpet.
Bordering on murder.
I've never owned a toyota. I always thought they were good cars for folks who like cars.

I ordered the new synergy camaro for my daughter just last saturday. They are only being built through May.
They run well, handle nice, and get good mileage.

Obviously you dont know the full story clearly. Yes the car accelerated to 100 mph for 6 miles while using handsfree calling system in the car talking with her husband. What your not clear on is that during this entire time she was applying the brakes with all her might and the car did not stop, along with downshifting the automatic transmission to the lower gears and with no change, she then put it in R-reverse with no change, she then turned off the ignition with no change, until it reached a speed of 33 mph did the engine finally shut down.
And you thought you had it all figured out.... :lol
The biggest problem is Toyota's denial of actually having a problem to begin with. Toyota blamed this lady for not driving the car under its description of "normal" conditions. Even though they had numerous reports of other incidents that were similar. When it finally broke to the media they wanted to blame the floor mats as a problem and completely denied anything else as electronics to blame.
Here is one of the guys that cracked the code on the "electronics" being faulty in just a few hours of testing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRN1CnKrc84

This is one of the things that I absolutely hate about new cars. All of the switches and controls just send suggestions to the computer, they don't control anything. If cars are going to be built this way there needs to be a master disconnect switch inside that can remove power to everything in just such a situation.

Shuffler, I worked for Toyota as a salesman back in 05. There were lots of people who did not want to buy any Toyota that was made here and would place overseas orders with us and wait for one to come in off the boat instead. It was a very insulting experience every time it happened.
Toyota continually made deals with GM to slow production during peak seasons. Some of my customers had to wait weeks for their cars or go buy a different car...most waited. The newer used Camry's that were on the lot sold for nearly as much as a brand new one.
When I owned Option Auto from 01 to 04 I could not buy any used Toyota's from the auction..there was no money in them unless i owned a franchise. They just held their value to well. Honda was nearly the same but there was plenty of them to buy.
Toyota workers are paid less money to build them than American automakers make. Many different rules and regulations were placed on those plants as well. Toyota did not need to come here..but once they were government began taking advantage of them. I hope they stay.
Now the truth to this thread comes out.
