Hello all, long time player (since tour 74) but infrequent poster here. A brief recap of my Sunday night heart problems and their tie to Aces High follows:
Sunday night I was online playing and went downstairs for something. I jogged back upstairs and began breathing hard - I just couldn't catch my breath. There was a slight tightness in my chest as well. After waiting a half hour with no improvement, my wife convinced me to head to the hospital. EKGs, blood pressure medication, heart rate medication followed. I really began to feel better at about 1am - I was ready to go home. The ER doc convinced me I should have further monitoring and that I should be transferred by ambulance to the DeBakey Heart and Vascular Center at Methodist in downtown Houston. I didn't want to, I didn't think I needed it, but ultimately agreed.
The next day I had a CT scan, and a cardiologist told me really bad news. I had a 99% blocked left anterior descending artery (LAD) right near the intersection of the circumplex artery, which branches off it. The CT wasn't precise enough on the location, but if the blockage was IN the intersection I would require a bypass rather than a stent. This location is known as the Widow Maker - google "widow maker artery" somethime and get scared to death. It is what killed Tim Russert. And the procedure needed to be done NOW. BTW, I am 46 years old.
The next day, thankfully, the blockage was 1mm away from the intersection. The artery was so clogged that the insertion of the filament, measured in microns and about the width of a hair follicle, caused an arrythmia while I was on the table. Crushing chest pain. A stent sufficed. With medication and proper diet/lifestyle changes, I should be ok.
I am home now. What does this have to do with Aces High? My lifestyle hasn't been the best. I eat too much, eat the wrong things, and drink too much. I am making major lifestyle changes. With that, booze is gone, and to symbolize that, so is my booze-related game ID. Stoliman will be no more. But I do have about 10,600 fighter perks, 5200 bomber perks, and 12,400 vehicle perks. I am going to burn them over the next couple of weeks by flying aircraft I have no business being in due to my very limited ability. But it should be fun, deacking large based in a 262 and such. And it will be fun for the rest of you, easily killing me in perked aircraft.
So, when you see the idiot in Ar234s at 3k over a vbase, now you know. Enjoy killing me. I will enjoy, hopefully, a much healthier and longer life than would have been otherwise dictated based on what I have learned over the past three days.

Ah watermelon brother........... <S>
It may sound strange from a halfstranger (only know you in the game) but I'm just glad that you listened to your wife. It would be a shame if something had happened to you.
But can you do us a favor, switch to one of those silly countries so we can shoot you down a few times in your 5 eny rides? LOL (jk)
:salute

Glad you caught it. I need to change too. This game is only part of the problem. Anything that makes it so you sit still for hours, stressing at the same time is a bad thing for your health. We think we could just play for 1 hr a week, but we know we cant. Ive started my second childhood..actually the first one never ended, and I want to be around awhile to enjoy it.
Hope the best for ya!

Keep the name, nothing in AH will affect your cardiac status so long as you log off and get some medically approved exercise.
Look at it this way, I've had no interaction with you previously. Now, when I see your name in AH, I might put down that hamburger and grab something healthier instead. :aok

<S> Better health to you sir. I retired from motorcycle roadracing 3 years ago when I turned 50. I was planning on racing forever. I had no health problems, didnt drink, wasnt fat, then I crashed on the track. During transport to the hospital and subsequent tests found a "bicardial arrythemea". I had been feeling something funny a few years but was not concerned, it felt more like a panic attack to me, thought it was just in my head. Now I have to "avoid stress". No more motorcycle racing.
Now there is only one thing that puts me in "Bicardial Arrythemea". Yup this game. I get so emersed I let my emotions transmit the "stress" from this game into my reality.
"just breathe Rick, it's only a game" has become my mantra.
And no I aint tellin my wife or my doctor what this game does.

You make a rather interesting, and intriguing, point D....... stoli, you could become somebody we all look up to about it and make many of us go get some exercise.

Stoliman, <<S>> bud. I've flown with you numerous times, mostly in posted Jug missions and such. Always glad to see your gameID come up in the text buffer. Take care of your real-life self first. Look forward to some more fun in game. :)

stoli, you could become somebody we all look up to about it and make many of us go get some exercise.
On the contrary, I think this is a perfect example of why you should have mini-fridges by your computer, not all the way downstairs!
:headscratch:
Good Luck sir, I'm glad to hear you are alright and caught this in time to make a difference. :salute

Kiss your wife and your doctor. :aok
Glad you will be around for many tours to come. :salute

Just glad you're ok

As for the 234 comment...there's a few who already do that (I, NKL5, pondhopr, Glasher, Larry) so an official Welcome to the club! :)

I ask that you please consider flying here soon. You're a solid guy and will be missed. Yes exercise, watch your food, check your stress, but none of us are active all the time. I never watch TV, I get shot down by you guys instead. Basically, you are going to need "seat" time to rest up after that exercise, do it here please sir <S>.

Just glad you're ok

Get well Stoli not much else matters if you don't have your health.

Good luck and take good care of yourself.. Glad you got it checked out in time.. :salute

Thanks all. But to clarify one thing, this game doesn't give me stress or cause any problems. I come to this came to get AWAY from stress and the real world. The only thing in this game that bugs me are two week noobs who refuse to learn range or how to PM.
Special thanks to Toad for some direct insight - much appreciated!
My name change is purely symbolic; I know it means nothing in-game, but just the fact that I am doing something differently means something, at least to me.
And Operation "Burn All My Perks" is in full swing this evening, I'm upping Tempests like I know what I am doing. Of course, I don't....... :)
-
Glad you're ok!
Well, if your name change is symbolic, maybe we should pitch some ideas for a new one.
How about...
HartAttk!

Glad to hear everything worked out ok Stoli. :salute

Bishop Amendment 3.16 "You are required to PM every Bish to inform them of your new name!!!"
My name change is purely symbolic; I know it means nothing in-game, but just the fact that I am doing something differently means something, at least to me.
And if it makes you happy bro, nothing else really matters!!!! You've always been a stand up guy, changing you're name wont change who you are!
-
well done stolie,

my dad died 2 yrs ago yesterday from a torn aorta and never even new it was bad.
i wish ya all the best in a solution to this time sensitive issue and i hope it has scared you

Glad to hear that you are ok! +1 to exercise and eating right (which I do barely any of :uhoh)

Had the same heart attack last march, Stoli. Thank your lucky stars you survived. It's a killer! I suggest the American Heart Association Cookbook. It's chocked full of good recipes that are easy on the ticker. I also recommend water aerobics (I do mine at the YMCA) and walking. Get well soon and Good luck.

Congrats on making a change for the better
:aok

See you soon and get well. :salute

First Stoliman, glad you caught it and wish you noting but the best. Like you and Filth I have come to the conclusion that my lifestyle is/was atrocious. I've improved somewhat. Last night I did 60 minutes on the treadmill and came away not breathing hard. Which is amazing since I am morbidly obese. I don't like either of those words and am just thankful and amazed I'm not on any medications. I am down 40 lbs from my highest weight. Quit stocking fun foods. Found out you will eat that carrot stick when you get hungry enough and water is your friend.
Hopefully I will join the local hiking club this spring. I use to love hiking with my kids. Just incredible how sedentary we sometimes get.
Take care guys!

I had a stent back in about 2000 or so (95% blocked artery). Can you believe they interrupted my Christmas with the family because I had to have the stent NOW?
I still haven't changed my lifestyle. I still smoke, drink, eat bad foods and don't exercise much. I figure whatever's going to happen will happen and there's no need for me to stress over it.
I do have a very good cardiologist who sees me regularily, periodically adjusts my medications and continues to encourage me to change my lifestyle but it's been 10 years now, my cholesterol and triglycerides and such are under control (they were'nt when I got the stent) and I mostly feel great.
I'm glad to hear you listened to your wife and doctor. You'll be fine.
BTW, were you "awake" for the proceedure like I was? Very surreal.
-
Glad you are still around Stoliman.
In my case, they didn't catch it in time, and I came very very close to dying (they didn't know if I would even survive the surgery). I am just now coming back after an emergency triple bypass. Be sure to thank your doc, and be glad you had one who is on the ball, mine definitely wasn't.
I have changed my lifestyle quite a bit, but I am still having to work on a few things. Old habits can be hard to break, even after something like this, but it sure is a motivator. :)

In your spare time read about Chelation Therapy, Dr. Ignaro's Miracle Molecule (Google Citrulline & Arginine), and of course eat right & listen to your Dr.. I prefer Homeopathic, Holistic approach, but just do it!

Hi Stoli,
First of all, I'm very happy ur still in the land of the living peeps. Glad ur survived. The way you describe it, you are a very very lucky man. It brings back many memories to me; april the 6th last year I went through almost exactly the same experience. During a routine examination (54 years but I still do a lot of sports) they discovered a few pretty much closed arteries. Never had complaints, but suddenly squared to death, 4 stents and a week later I was at home again. "Your okay sir and good as new"...... I was lucky too. I realize that every day. The hard thing is to get it out of your head. Takes time. Believe me. Change ur callsign, ur way of life and all that. Burn ur perks even. But dont forget; talk about it, talk to people who had the same experience and do the things you enjoy. Live your life. I hope to see you in the sky now and then Stoli. Take care my friend.

Well since we are all sharing something or another...I am 38 years old and on December 30th went to the doctor for a sinus infection. First time to see this new doctor since my wife and I had gone to visit and basically "interview" him to see if he would be a good fit as our family physician.
Anyway as I stepped on the scale there I got a look at my weight...300.2 ponds...So I asked him for a body fat and density test. I come back the next day to another part of the office and find out that the former athlete (ME) is a startling 38% body fat. That afternoon I went back to the gym for the first time to actually lift weights and do something other than prove I could still do it. Over the next 15 days I lost 6 lbs but still wasn't eating right all the time. Not that I didn't eat healthy; I just didn't do it all the time; and now I think I eat healthy 99% instead of the 50-70% of the time.
Well 15 days later I started a weight loss program and a new work out regimen and now that I have almost 60 days into it I have dropped close to 30 pounds but haven't checked body fat since that day. My goal is to end up around 245 and have 15% or > body fat. My doctor has me scheduled for a CT scan in early April to check my arteries...I am scared of what that might turn up but I want to be in better shape just in case and my goal is to be very close to my goal body weight by then. I eat about 1500 calories a day, work out three times a week with strength and cardio training (bike or swimming) and am hoping to be down enough by the end of the summer to try my first mini-triathlon here at the local state park.
