Title: IOC ticked off because Canadians stayed after awards on ice and drank beer???
Post by: Reschke on February 26, 2010, 07:31:01 AM
Man why can't they just leave well enough alone. If they won so be it. the article says that the women's hockey team was in an arena that was "Players lingered for more than 70 minutes after the awards ceremony reveling in the arena, which was empty except for media and arena staff." To me that isn't a problem; they just won the TRUE world championship of their sport which only happens at a quadrennial time frame. They should be allowed a little leeway when celebrating. My one problem is the player who was 18 being allowed to drink by her coach who I am sure was in the arena as well. He/She has a responsibility to uphold the rules and laws for a team that he is coaching; however the IOC shouldn't care. They are worse than the UN in my opinion.

You do realize that in Canada the drinking age is 18.

Most US media outlets are omitting that little tidbit.

I say good for the Canadian Woman's Hockey team.

They earned it.

I just figured it was just the same age all over Canada, seems weird to have different ages in different parts, cause I know when I was there we could drink in the bars at 18.

From what I have read the IOC is ticked about them drinking and smoking on the ice instead of the locker room or some place else.  So they won, so what does that mean they are exempted from the rules that the IOC has laid down about how the participants are supposed to comport themselves.  I suppose you think the Japanese jumping on their snowboarder who got off the plane looking like he would fit in at most public high schools in the US was just terrible of them.

I agree that they should have celebrated in the locker rooms, not out on the ice in front of other people, you know it is the Olympics and that just doesn't seem very sportsman like, although I don't think they should have their medals taken away.  As for the 18yr drinking, thats not a really big deal considering she's only months away from being legal in BC, it's not like she's 18 and the legal age is 21.

Darn brave souls on the IOC to think they can even contemplate taking gold medals out of Canadian female hockey players hands...in Canada to boot!

<Maybe they can get the AoM to taken 'em away.>  :devil

From what I have read they didn't do this until 70 minutes after the game when the only other people present were the officials and the media.  I don't think they should be stripped of their medals but I wouldn't be surprised if this didn't come back to haunt them later in their careers.

All but Alberta where it is 18.

............................. .......................

I forget which channel it was on (CTV?), but showed a Canadian who had just won a gold medal being handed a jug of beer on a street and taking a long swig from it. There was 100s of people around. A short while later they showed him again and the jug was half empty.

(Jon Montgomery won a gold medal for Canada in skeleton, he walked through the streets of Whistler guzzling from a pitcher of beer that he gripped with two hands.)

All but Alberta and Quebec where it is 18.

Fixed.  :aok

Actually, in Quebec the minimum is only a suggestion.   :lol

Pretty lame to react like that over the celebration. The crowd was already cleared out. It would have been better to have a word with the coach about the under aged drinking.

I'm a lot more upset about the open steel pillars next to the luge track. That was something to be upset about IMO. One issue is a misdemeanor, the other was fatal.
