This intro was chilling to watch as a kid.. The entire flick scared the $&#* out of me!! Still creeps me out a little when I drive alone on wooded roads at night....

You answered your own question....
Once you program the helicopter to hold latitude and longitude, altitude becomes rather easy to add.

I'm gonna assume by this you mean the altitude information is coming from the GPS unit? I didn't realize GPS was capable of such precise altitude reporting.

Correct, GPS is far more accurate than I think you give it credit for. With the right receiver GPS is accurate to within a couple inches in all directions.
Most of the guided munitions are usually fed only GPS, the onboard computer calculates the vector based on rate of change in the X,Y and Z axis.
