Title: switching from 'Time Warner' to 'Verizon FiOS'
Post by: soda72 on March 04, 2010, 11:46:31 AM
I've decided to switch out my current internet service provider for 'Verizon FiOS' ...

Anyone here already use their service?

Any problems, or disappointments with it?

Does your download times vary like cable?   For instance early in the morning seems to provide the best time for downloading while later in the afternoon it's not as good...

How else would one download porn?

 :D

But the real reason is work related.. (and no it doesn't have anything to do with the porn industry)

I ditched Time Warner/Bright House after years of service to get the Verizon Fios TV,phone and internet. TW/BH was a bit cheaper in the long run, but, Verizon blows them away in quality and service IMHO. No intardnet issues ever, very reliable thus far. Going on 3 years now.

Have not noticed any difference in DL times. Seems like it smokes all day, every day.

I see.... You must be the editor for the Sports Illustrated magazine. Nobody else is forced to decide between hot and hotter. :D

'Hot' is not a word I would associated with 'Time Warner' at the moment.  The last three months my download times have been limited to 1MB/s for some reason.  I don't recall ever seeing it this bad before, considering what I'm paying for the service I've had enough.

1MB/s is better than 125KB/s. I understand what you mean, though. We once paid $50 a month for 70KB/s Internet.

dont say does your  *****  vary/do whatever *like cable*   Cable HSI is different from system to system, not just provider to provider..

Time warner internet performance in once town will not be the same as time Warner internet in another town..   It all depends on system artechecture, date of last update, head end equipment.

In my town I have 20MBit.. but I never see LESS than 30mbit when DLING or testing, and often its over 40.  because we have it setup to where if extra bandwidth is available, you can use it,  it will only cap you at your provisioned speed when network utilization in your area (node or node segment) reaches a certain level (say 70% usage)   subsequently the speeds you get are almost always HIGHER than what is advertised.  provided you dont have any wiring issues or anything of that nature of course.  In college station they are fixing to roll out 50mbit with 100mbit burst

just throwing that out there for anyone who is not thinking of trying a certain provider because somone from another area told them it sucks.  its sucks for them in their area, but it might be greatest thing since sliced bread in your area.  try em all.

You have to remember that sometimes the servers you are downloading from can't supply the bandwidth to you to max out your connection .  I've noticed some are better than others but it isn't always on your end or your ISP's fault.

Watch with FIOS though there wireless feature interacts with other wireless devices within your network. (eg: Laptops, wii systems, BD player, etc.) It kicks me off the internet even on my desktop which is hard wired.

Personally I Hate Verizon FIOS! Check the amount of disco's I've had in recent months you'll see what i'm talking about.

Oh btw Verizon FIOS Charges you over $200 in early termination fees!!

Im always leary of anything that requires the contract..

if the service is good, you shouldn't have to be FORCED to keep it.

The cancellation fee protects them from a loss when doing the install. They had to send out two different teams to install the service for me.  If I canceled my service before they can recover that cost through my subscription they end up losing money.  The cancellation fee protects them from that loss and is quite understandable.

As for reliable service I'll keep an eye on it, so far no problems as of yet....  I loved downloading the new HTC patch in a few seconds...

Now as for cable having to share my bandwidth with others kind of reminds me of socialism, just seems wrong you know... or maybe I've spent to much time in Texas.

 :bolt:
