First off we'll need your motherboard model so we can see what AMD socket you have.

Motherboard is MSI p45 platinum

Well that's an LGA 775 Socket motherboard, Intel.  But typically the most recommended 775 CPU is an E8400.  I don't keep up with Intel much so I'll leave it to someone else.

I got the e8400 plays everything maxed really happy with it.  but the e8500 is only 20 bucks more.

What Intel processor is currently in the motherboard?

What Intel processor is currently in the motherboard?

If one doesn't know which model CPU is in use, use HWINFO32:

http://www.hwinfo.com/ (http://www.hwinfo.com/)  , or

CPU-Z :

http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php (http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php)

to find out.

Here is the MSI CPU page for that board.
http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=prodcpu2&prod_no=1479&maincat_no=1
Need to find out what you have on it then go from there.

....

EDIT: Nevermind...Google corrected me this time, it's Intel T7700 (took it 5 tries to find that).   Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T7700 (4M Cache, 2.40 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)  (http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=29762)  I don't know much about Intel, but isn't the "T" line a mobile line?

If this is a laptop, you might as well forget about trying to upgrade the CPU.  There is more than a fair chance the manufacturer of the laptop has hardcoded the CPU support into the BIOS ROM.  The reason being is all about power management.

Your only hope is to contact the manufacturer and ask them about an upgrade.  If they say it cannot be done, then believe them and move along.

Actually not a bad processor. Think TD uses that in his builds, or something maybe a little newer.

Think TD uses E8400 and now primarily i7s.  Hard to check when he's gone. :D

As for the E7400, I have used it and it's a good CPU for AH, but if you plan to play things like Crysis or GTA IV on max settings you'll want newer (and a good GPU to compliment it of course).  An E7400 and GTX 9800GTX+ plays AH maxed (think I used 2K shadows) with 60FR with dips to 55.  Just depends on what you need the computer for.

Yeah I knew it had a 4 in it...couldn't remember which series. Regardless for AH such a processor is good, I think you may be lacking in GPU, though.

Well maybe Ebdf is, but I certainly don't lack in the GPU department, just CPU....GTX 260 with an AMD Athlon 4850e.  The Intel is a family member's. :)
Am curious to see what ebdf has in terms of GPU though, unless wanting to upgrade CPU is more more reasons then just AH.

Yeah that's what I meant, him not you. :P
I'm also curious why he actually wants to upgrade period, if he's experiencing problems in game, or he just thinks his processor is old.

Have you ever overclocked ?   These Intel CPU's are known for their ability to jump up quite a bit in clock speed .

According to MSI's supported CPU list for the board you can use either of these

I think these are the top tier for this board , but i'm not up on intel stuff so i posted all the core 2 and quad stuff below .  It will also run celerons and pentium class cpu's

If you have an aftermarket cooler you should be easily able to run that thing up to 3.4ghz, at least.

I have this processor: Core 2 Duo - Conroe SL9ZL E6600 266 2.40 and it handles AH very well...it's older and slower than your yet never gets above 80% utilization.
