Check and make sure you are not running the 196.75 drivers from NVidia. NVidia has pulled them from the WEB page as they are apparently causing video cards to overheat and die when running games.
-
Thanks Skuzzy - I just updated a machine at work a few days ago, and pulled the most recent from the web site, as I usually do. He doesn't play any games with it (that I know of....) - but I sure don't want to take chances, either!

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I seem to be having a LOT of problems with NVIDIA drivers lately.
I can't recall exactly when it started but my card has been overheating because the fan wasn't running correctly. I can't remember what driver version I was on, but I'm on 196.21 and it's doing the same thing. I have to use EVGA Precision to manually up the fan speed, but it gets weirder than that. My computer crashes don't seem to have anything to do with heat, I once accidentally ran the card's temp up to 76C, but I did not even get a slight anomaly, frame rate it, or anything to suggest abnormal activity, yet the computer will crash whenever it feels like it at temps such as 55C. I've had EVGA Precision crash after a very sudden major graphics screw-up that locked my screen for 2 minutes, but then I'm right back into the game. I've actually been having random crashes no matter what I'm doing on the computer, but they are less often than when I'm playing a game.
What can I do to fix this? I'm not too computer savvy, but I'm learning more every day.

Mar,
The new cards have auto fans that are suppose to run faster as temps go up, but they do a poor job at it. defualt start
speed is 25% i think. I use Rivatuner to set my fans @ 100% all the time @comp bootup. My temp range from
Idle 40-45 to loaded 55-74 (depending on the game).

When left to its own devices the fan will not increase speed at all. I use EVGA Precision to max the fan speed manually when playing games.
Are you sure that up to 74C isn't hard enough to burn something? What card do you have? If it isn't, heat is a non-issue.

Stock coolers will keep the temperature around 65-80 c typically. There is a fan curve that adjusts the fan speed in steps when certain temperatures are exceeded. Nobody usually wants to run fans at 100% because you could just as well play next to a operating vacuum cleaner. Videocards can handle those high temperatures just fine but of course lower is always better.

Mar you have not said what card you have?
I have computers with 8800s 9800s and 295s all using SLI. I use the Cooler Master ATCS 840 case with the 230mm fans and all additional fan points filled with Scythe 120mm x 12mm 2000rpm fans and all fans are controlled with the Zalman 6 channel fan controller (except the CPU fan of course). One of the 12mm fans is actually mounted to the rear of the case (by the case design) and draws air through any unoccupied slots (the case includes slot protectors that allow air passage). I use the EVGA Precision utility also and on none of these systems have I had temperatures run that high. I have read that some of the early releases of the EVGA 295s and 280s had heat related issues but still dont know what card you have.
Is it possible you have your video card installed tightly to another card that might also generate heat or inside a case that does not have enough circulation?
8800s in my system run at 55C the 9800s at 56C and the 295s are hitting 61C (idle speeds) with temps running 10C higher (295s 14C) under load.
I have seen bad memory on the graphics card cause reboots like you report but also hot system chips and inadequate power supplies do the same thing. I would say we need more information to really nail this one down. Maybe you could help things along by posting system specs and a DXDIAG report? Im sure someone here will spot the problem.
EDIT: Dont wait on me Im on holiday! :neener: :airplane:

I just now had a bluescreen the instant windows booted up...
From what I see here, I don't think heat has ever been the problem. The card is an NVIDIA GeForce 9800GTX+.

I run 196.21 with no problems. I updated awhile back after encountering some problems with artifacting. The problem has been solved.
You could be having a memory issue. One thing you could try is running memtest. ( google memtest X86 is 32 bit)That can be downloaded for free and put on a cd. Put memtest on CD, put in cd rom, have computer to boot from cd rom on start up and this will automatically run memtest.
You could also go to my computer, properties, advanced, start up and recovery, and unclick auto restart. When your computer BSOD it will not automatically restart, this will let you read the blue screen. You will be able to see the error code. Look up the error code and it may point you in a direction.
A other thing is make sure your grounded and check your connections to your motherboard.Make sure your grounded with your compter and no static electricity when reaching and touching components in your PC.
I am sure there are others more qualified to help you but this is where I would start.

196.21 here and no problems on my G92 8800GTS KO.
GPU's can withstand heat up to 110 C, fwiw. 120 is about the max, but obviously not recommended. GPU's are much more tolerant of heat, than CPU's.

Been running 196.21 for a month now, no problems. GTX260. Luckily I don't update my drivers as a rule until they've been out for a while (and the bleeding edge users have used them long enough to notice any problems).

i had the driver's my video my computer freezes and restarts on unending loops. mobo lights are on my monitor shows no connection time for a new one I guess. could this corrupt windows? just wondering. because my computer had to repair windows yesterday. I had the 196.75 drivers installed, rolled them back but problem wont go away. this started 1 week ago. usually happens when computer is on for a few hours then will freeze unless I leave it alone for 1 hour or so.

That is exactly what I do as well.

Driver Cleaner Pro to get the bits and pieces of the bad driver out?
-
Driver Cleaner Pro should do the trick.
-
I've always uninstalled the Driver in Device Manager and installed the new one. I have never had a problem in 11 years on any PC. Driver Cleaner Pro does not provide the # of the driver, so if you have an NVIDIA Northbridge (at least a year or so ago, when I tried it once), good luck in picking the right one. I promptly uninstalled DCP and did what I have always done.

Well that explains why the auto fan never ran any higher, this has obviously never been a heat issue. Unfortunately whatever the problem was got so that my games wouldn't even start at all, so I just did a reformat. Gunna stick with the 196.21 drivers for a while too.
Thanks guys.
