Title: F6F - explanation needed.
Post by: Bozon12 on July 18, 2001, 11:35:00 PM
I'm still rather new to the game, so aside from my favorite rides (spits and hogs), i try the other planes.
what's with the F6F? it seems too big for a TnB figher and it can't "scratch the mach" at a dive like the other missiles (P47, 190, p51, hogs...)
All i know about it is from my little (and bitter  :) ) experience with it since there aren't any preformance charts at AH site.
So, what's the best way of using it?
Who can it outrun and who outturn?

The best way to explain the Hellcat is this:  It's a slow P-47 that can turn.  In my opinion (and that is all it is), the F6F seems to be one of the better turners in the game.  While it is no Japanese plane or spit, very few of the others can turn with it either.

While discussing this plane the other day with another guy who flies the Hellcat (and is much better at it than I am), he told me that he flies it like a Jug, but one that can turn.  This is pretty much the way that I approach fights in it as well.  I have found that it is best to stay high and bounce the low guy.  In the dive, it can catch most planes and can match their initial turns.

I would also add that it really becomes effective when flown with someone else in it.  Deja and I have had some pretty damn good sorties together (usually they just happen, nothing organized about them).

Yep, that's the Hellcat, a Jug that can turn.  It's also a Jug that can accelerate pretty well.

In the early stages of a dive, the Hellcat is one of the fastest in the game.  With a bit of a head start, It'll catch F4U's, P47s, etc. trying to dive away.  The hellcat's better accelleration helps in the early bit of the dive, and you can catch many "faster" planes when they don't expect you can.  Anything that tries to dive away from a Hellcat is going to die unless it has better high-speed control, a higher top speed, and a decent E advantage at the start of the maneuver.  That's a lot of ifs in there... mostly guys just die trying to run from my Hellcat.  Give me a bit of E advantage and I'll run down a Pony or a D9.. sure they'll get away eventually, but most times I'll fill them with .50 cal first.

Now the Hellcat can turn, but it has a NASTY accellerated stall.  You must do two things to succeed in the Hellcat.  1.  Have an energy advantage.  2.  Don't push it hard when slow.  Your best bet is to keep it fairly fast... 250-300 or so.  The Hellcat can turn, but it needs an E advantage to do it.  If you don't have the E to really crank it without getting to slow, you are going to be in trouble.  Keep your speed up... fly it like a Jug.  When you need to make the kill, only then use it's turning ability.

Oh, it also climbs a heck of a lot better than the Jug does.  The Hellcat is my point defense fighter and Navy plane while the Jug is my bird of choice for a longer range sweeps, escorts, patrols, and that sort of thing.

Thx for the full explanations.
I'll try that, although i suck with the Jug too...  :)

when in doubt that thing can take a beating like no other and keep flying.   :D I should know because the only thing I'm good at in the hellcat is being a flying target it seems  ;)
