Title: Texas state fair
Post by: v1st on March 14, 2010, 09:07:52 AM
My wife saw it on Oprah a couple months back.  I was hoping she would forget about it.  But now she wants me to look for airline tickets.  I live in New York so is it worth going to?   I wouldn't be asking this question if it was running during the convention.

It's pretty cool and there is a lot of stuff to do. I don't know what you guys are in to to make the call if it's worth the trip or not.

Never been to the Texas state fair, but Milwaukee's Summerfest is awesome, it's the worlds largest musical festival, it's 11 days, 11 stages, & over 800 bands, if you ask me that the festival to go to, a lot of good food too.

It's "The State Fair of Texas" and I've been several times. They used to let us out of school for a day and bus us down there. Went on Texas/OU weekend once... once! The crowd was horrible. They do have a very good car show and exposition. For my money, the Southwest Exposition and Fat Stock Show in Ft.Worth is more enjoyable. But you can get anything you can imagine deep fat fried at the State Fair.

I live in Dallas now for 6 years and have been to the fair a couple of times.  I enjoy going the one day a year.

I'm not sure I would go to the trouble of flying in from NY to see it though..frankly...just driving down is almost enough to disuade me.

There is a big game every year between U. Texas and U. Oklahoma, big local rivalry, called the 'red river shootout'.  Do not go on that day, like we made the mistake of doing.  It is absolutely a wall to wall madhouse.

But, has some fun things.  Best corn dogs you have ever tasted, they were invented here.  Every year they do some signature dish of deep fried food.  Last year was deep fried butter, year before was bacon.  But can get like, deep fried snickers, deep fried cheese sandwich, deep fried twinkie....

Lots of exhibits to see, livestock, stuff like that.  Lots of fair rides, and games, typical stuff.

I have honestly never been. There is usually so much to do here in Texas that covering it all takes a lifetime.

The Octoberfest is fun.
Houston Rodeo ... I love going to watch the working animals. I usually skip the actual rodeo and bands.

The state fair is awesome, tons of stuff to do and really really big!

Now actually taking a flight from New York to Texas for the fair alone will NOT be worth the trip...add some things to do while you are down here then yes the trip will be worth it.

Texas is very dynamic is entertainment, you almost find anything to do if you look hard enough.

My opinion find other things to do while you are down here besides just the fair.

Generally bad weather, too many people, crowed downtown, thieves want in your cars, bad and unhealthy food, rude people that go to it......................oh yeah sounds like fun. You are not missing much, stay clear.
