Title: B26 Torps.
Post by: lyric1 on March 16, 2010, 01:23:06 AM
While I was at the airforce museum last week I noticed a torpedo on the ground under the wing of A B-26 it had a brief description of what happened. Well I happened to get a book on another subject that went in to detail about the torp run with the B-26's made in a combat situation here is the article. I did not add it all as it starts to ramble on about other things not related. :aok

Yeah I would like to see a formation OF B26's get close enough to strafe the tower of a CV IN AHII & have some survive.

It is not hard to do, but if there are 5" gunners, forget it.

Midway was the only time that was used.  It is kinda like asking for B-25s to be available on CVs.

No not correct per the link from the airforce museum I posted above. Plus this is not the wish list & I did not ask for it just thought I would mention it as I did not know the above mentioned facts & just thought I would share it with others like me who did not know. :aok

My favorite way to kill a cv is with 26s at around 2000/2500 ft with 500 lbs.
lose all the birds almost every time but if ya absolutely have ta get the job done, this works well.

I guess the RAF had them as well. 14 squadron used them quite a bit interesting reading of the commander of this squadron & his aircraft also should make a good skin when they update the B26. One of the links also talks about torpedo runs where ships had been sunk & damaged. Guess the RAF did more with them than the USAF in terms of success.

For the most part, the USAAF considered using medium bombers as torpedo planes was a wasted effort in resources and too much of a risk to both the air crew and plane.  It wasn't until the glide torpedo was introduced did the USAAF revisit the idea of using medium bombers as torpedo planes.  With the glide torpedo, the B-26 was able to launch the torpedo from a farther range that made it less vulnerable to the ships anti-air defenses.  However, only a specialized unit created to evaluate the glide torpedo in combat conditions used it and never saw wide spread use among regular Marauder squadrons in the PTO.

If my ever fading memory recalls, the first attempt at torpedoing with the B-26 was at Battle of Midway and it was a failure.

Your right I posted the story about it above. This is just some info I posted & this is not the wish list forum.  :headscratch: Maybe I should post it there I am starting to like the idea of Torps on B26's.

Partially correct.  There are only two instances the USAAF used B-26s as a torpedo bomber and both actions occured on the same day.  While the B-26 torpedo bombers were attacking the IJN fleet off Midway, another group of B-26 torpedo bombers were attacking the IJN carrier Ryujo off the Aleutians.  In both attacks, the B-26s suffered heavy losses and didn't hit anything.
