The Cooper is the most ridiculous car on the road today.   Why would anyone want to drive such a silly looking monstrosity??

The vehicles looks like it came out of a Cracker Jack box, it is so toy like in appearance.   Besides, there are so many far superior autos that one can get for the same amount of money.  It is so small that it certainly would not be comfortable to drive on a long trip.

Really, what does it excel at?   Nothing that I can think of.   Can anyone come up with something?  Consumer Reports says that it is unexceptional for reliability too.   While it is not that bad, it certainly is not among the highly rated vehicles.   I certainly would not consider a Cooper to be a good investment.

Girls do seem to think that it is cute.  There are a couple of young movie starlets in Hollywood that drive them.  But for a man to drive a Cooper?   I don't understand how that could ever be possible.

In sharp contrast, many famous Americans drive my auto, including many of the hottest male actors in Hollywood like Leonardo DiCaprio, Orlando Bloom, and Owen Wilson.

TwinEng, how many cars do you know get over 40MPG when driving at 75MPH?  If I keep it under 70MPH, it gets over 42MPG.  How about 35MPG in the city?  These are the numbers I get.

You ever been to an autocross and watch a Cooper run circles around Porsches and Corvettes?  They handle like they are on rails.

I understand the macho man has to make fun of the Coopers to maintain status, and that is mostly due to ignorance.  Not saying it implies to you, but as a general statement.

Ugly car?  Different, yes.  Try and mistake a Cooper for anything else on the road.  Some folks like driving something a bit unique.  How about this?  It has more head room and leg room and our Lexus IS250.  I am 6'3" tall and I have a couple more inches of headroom to spare in the Cooper, versus hiutting the headliner in the Lexus.  It rides better than our Lexus.  It will outhandle our Lexus.  It will stop faster than our Lexus.  Its traction control works as well as the Lexus and its dynamic stability system is better than the Lexus.  With the back seats down, it has more space for carrying stuff than the Lexus.  On a long drive it has become the vehicle of choice as it is more comfortable.

What is does not do well is carry more than two adults.  It is also not as quick in a straight line as the Lexus.

Reliability?  I only have 30,000 miles on mine.  Not a problem with it at all.  Still nice and solid.  No squeaks (cannot say the same thing for the new Corvette I test drove) or rattles.

I do deal with a lot of grief.  People trying to run me off the road.  The car has been vandalized in our parking lot three times so far.  I have to deal with people like you all the time.  For some reason there are people in this world who just get pissed off when they see a Cooper and they have to let you  know about it.  I'll never understand it.  it is just a car.  No one is forcing you to drive one, so why the show?  Why should anyone care what some actors are driving?  I do not get that one at all.  It has never been a criteria for me when buying a car.  Is it for you?

One other thing.  The damn thing is just a hoot to drive.  Parking is easy and zipping through the cracks in the traffic is painless.  I periodically have to elude some redneck trying to run me off the road and I love to see them cussing and flipping me off as I shoot through a crack they cannot possibly follow.

You do not like the car?  Good on you.  Don't buy one.  See how easy that is?

Reliability?   Are you serious?    Skuzzy's car doesn't have accelerator or brake pedal issues.    The Prius has been anything but a "trouble free car".

A Prius really, a Prius.  :huh One of the ugliest cars ever made, and a real performer too.

I would love to have a Cooper painted like the Union Jack :rock  They've got a style that sets them apart from the rest of the mess that's out there.
Are parts expensive for them and hard to get? There's not a dealership within 2 hours drive of here  :frown:

I'm sure the parts are very accessible.   Either by dealer or on the internet at various parts sites.

BMW/Mini is in the process of expanding dealership coverage.  If you are two hours from a dealership, they will cover any expense if you car needs to be towed to the dealer for warranty repair.

Something I did not tick on.  Mini has a pretty comprehensive warranty package.  They cover everything, including oil changes, during the warranty period.  I opted for the extended warranty as the cost of it will be more than offset by the cost of the brake job the car will need next time it goes in.  Yes, it will be covered under warranty as well.

Heck, I did forget to mention.  I have had troubles with wearing out the wiper blades.  On my second set, but they are also covered in the warranty.

Another thing about the Mini is you get exactly what you want in the car.  It is quite normal for Mini owners to special order thier car.  There is no charge for this.  You just have to be able to wait the 6 to 8 weeks for the car.

They actually use vinyl for the decor packages so you can change them around when you want, without having to have a paint job done.

Coopers are nice i looked at one when they first came out, but i live in snow and icy road country, 4X4 is almost a given during winters here, it would make a nice second car thou

Actually, with decent snow tires, the Cooper is a pretty competent vehicle in snow and ice. mostly due to its light weight, combined with the traction and stability control systems.

It also heats up very quickly.  When it was 20F around here recently, the car would warm up in less than 100 yards and get comfy inside really fast.  Warms up faster than any car I have ever owned.

Heck, if it gets stuck, just get out, pick it up and move it.  :)

Oh wait, I did miss commenting on the "investment" aspect.  When gas was over $5/gallon, I could have sold my car for more than I paid for it.

Right now, its still holding 72% of its original cost, after 3 years.  A 3 year old Prius is retaining about 57% of its value.

Maybe I am missing something.  Do guys just not care for a good handling sporty ride anymore?  Is that what is defining a man today?  When was the last time anyone saw a Prius on an auto-cross course chewing up Corvettes and Porsches?

Last year at one of the Cobra meets, a road course was setup and the Cobra guys begged me not to enter the Cooper.  On a road course with no straights, the Cooper would have embarassed them.  I doubt they would have been concerned with a Prius.  Matter of fact, there was not a Prius there.  I guess "men" do not race anymore.

Skuzzy....

Smacketh by day, banneth by night!

(For the record I agree the Cooper is rather unique with a good mix of traits, I wouldn't mind owning one.)

I am not a real man though, only go 0 to 170 in 8 seconds, the Prius would still have beat me by a few lengths!

 :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl

I hope your joking, let's compare here.

Style:                        Cooper wins x1000
Handling/acceleration:   Cooper wins x1000
Efficiency:                   Tie, Prius gets better MPG in the city when it's running electric,  Cooper probably gets better @75mph on highway.
Environmentally friendly:  Cooper wins x2, nearly the same MPG without all the toxic NIMH batteries and miles of copper wiring.

Overall Cooper wins x4000

I'm pretty sure TwinEng is pulling our chain though. :D

Cooper also wins on price.

Base price for a Cooper is $18,800 U.S. while the Prius base is $21,000 U.S.

At $18,800 the Cooper beats the Prius hands down, it looks like a fun little car, great styling, great mileage and with BMW technology and engineering you cant go wrong.

brings back a funny memory back in high school, our band teacher had one and the band was outside practicing for the up coming Parade, we spotted his Mini-Cooper and we put each wheel up on milkcrates we borrowed from the School Kitchen,  lol  the look on his face was priceless, lucky for us he had a great sense of humor

IDGAF what you drive.   If you go head on with a Semi in a Smart Car or an F-350, the Semi will win.   But your brain hitting your forehead will happen regardless of what vehicle you're driving.

Cooper's are just as safe as a Prius, if not safer (per the Toyota recalls).

I have often wondered why this question gets asked.  From where I sit, the safest crash to be in is the one you never were in.  I put more value on accident avoidance than what happens if I get hit by a train.  I have made use of that criteria for every car I have ever owned.  In 40 years of driving, it has served me well.

The one serious accident I have been involved in would not have happened had I been in a smaller, better handling car.  It happened in my parents 69 Ford LTD.

The Coopers handling prowess allows a person to get out of the way of trouble before it happens.  ALl you have to do is pay attention to your surroundings.  I suppose driving a motorcycle for 25 years also contributes to my awareness of surroundings.

I will also say, the Cooper is not for everyone.  It is more sporty car.  Pedals are set for wonderful heel and toe action.  The dead pedal is where it should be as well.  The seats are firm and the bolsters are functional.  They hold you in place really well (avoiding the leather clad option helps).  I would imagine heavier folks would be very uncomfortable in the car due to the seats sportier design.  The interior design is quirky, to say the least.  The large center mounted speedometer is a bit garrish.

The base car hints at its heritage.  6 way adjustable seats, that grip, and tilt/telescoping steering wheel with the heel and toe pedal placements says "drive me, drive me hard".  It is difficult not to have fun driving this car.

Skuzzy, if I ever can get down there, I'd like to try that bad boy on a track (if there's any near ya).    Coopers just look like "fun to drive".   While I don't have one, I was all for getting one until the "wife ack" shot it down.    :cry

BTW for those inquiring about a Mini Cooper's safety rating.   Read this:

"The 2010 Mini Cooper does well in government crash tests, earning four out of five stars for driver and passenger protection in a front end crash tests as well as for rear passenger protection in a side impact crash tests. Even better, it receives the top score of five stars for front passenger protection in a side impact collision. In rollover testing, it earns a five-star rating, which means it has only a 10 percent chance of rollover in a single vehicle crash -- a score that is excellent for the class."

I can name "mid size cars" that are more unsafe than this.   Coopers are very good for safety.   Christ, Mini is owned by BMW.

I do not take it out for roundy-round racing, but there are a few autocross events a year I go to.  The next one is in College Station in the first week of May.  I'll be following a bunch of Cobras down to it.  I stay off the track when they are out, and they stay off the track when I am out.

Great bunch of guys.  I usually beat out thier times by 2 or 3 seconds.  Last year I finished up third overall.  I was on street tires.  This year I will be on racing slicks and lighter wheels.  Should help improve the time.

BMW does not just own Mini either.  BMW designed the current generation of Mini from the ground up.  The engine is an interesting story.  BMW had no expertise in doing small 4 cylinder engines so they contracted Peugeot to design the block and lower end of the engine.  BMW designed the head.  The final engine assembly is done in Japan or France.  The car is still built in a state of the art facility in Oxford, England.

They are coming out with a new coupe later this year.  It looks slick.  Better aerodynamics, and 150 pounds lighter than the regular Cooper.  From the beltline down it is still Cooper.  It is just a new roof and roofline.  Looks like it is wearing a baseball cap backwards.  Should get better gas mileage and better performance.

Ive only driven a n/a 1.6l rental but it was such a blast to drive. fantastic steering, plenty of feel and really pointy. great ride too - stiff enough so it doesnt roll too much but compliant enough to deal with our dreadful potholed, ridged, broken roads. :aok

Who knows what they are packed in, besides being coated in Cosmoline.  I picked mine up at the dealer and it was ready to go.

Cooper is one of the few new cars that stands out in a crowd of 'jellybean' look-alikes.

I'd get one if I could.
Problem I have is .. for a few bucks more I can have an older Vette  ..and there just isn't any comparison at that point.
