Title: Old Games coming back again for new life
Post by: Reschke on March 19, 2010, 11:49:19 PM
Just found this since I actually loved Transport Tycoon when it came out way back in the day.

There is an open source version out now and I am downloading and going to try it out to see if I can get it to run on my rig. If not I happen to have an older setup just hanging out for exactly this type of thing. Almost forgot that it is an open source project and you have to locate a copy of Transport Tycoon Deluxe to use or use a version of Linux as outlined in the FAQ here ---> http://wiki.openttd.org/FAQ_installation

Old games?

I would love the WinXP/Linux compatible SU27 Flanker 1.5 remake.

I had a Harrier sim  (Av8b)way back when by Dormark that I loved.
Shipped on a single 1.4 mb floppy disk.

Gave you a complete task force to play with, mission designer, the whole works.

Tried a couple of times to resurrect it, but it was never quite the same.
Would love to see someone remake it with upgraded graphics and FM for modern computers.

Still play Xcom on my old Athlon rig in WinXP. I finally got it running a couple of years ago and I just couldn't get rid of the setup just because it has a few old games on it like that. Hard to get rid of some of the classics.

How about Stealth Fighter for the Commodore 64? That was a great game! There was also a great heli game for the 128, can't remember what name is, but it had a cobra helicopter. I just bought my wife the "Retro-Duo" a combo Nintendo/ Nintendo 64. She's a Mario 3 freak. really the only video game she took to, oh there is another- Boulderdash, lol

I'm still trying to find a way to get 'Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption' to run properly on an XP system. Made for wWindows 95/98, should run fine on XP, but never wants to. Half the time it won't even install right when I retry it. :(

You mean:

???

That was one of my favorite all time arcade games!

Now if only I could get my old Lode Runner disks going, and all 100+ levels I made myself

Yeah:) that's it. I found two places in town that have the arcade game:
Chuck E Cheese and a little music store that has an arcade in the back (games, bumper cars, air soft arena, etc). I hate Chuck E Cheese, but can tolerate the music place.

We rotate our kids out on friday nights - it's all their choice of where we go, what we do, etc.  But secretly I'm a little happy when they choose the music store arcade & I play a few games for myself. :)

I am really digging this Open Source Transport Tycoon that is out there now. You can group your vehicles into sections so you know which ones are all going to need replacing at one time instead of hoping like crazy that you found all of them and aren't costing your company money each month. Plus with the revamped AI they can be pretty aggressive or very laid back.

Railroad Tycoon and a freeware game called Hypertanks or some such for the Mac OS (Before they numbered it at startup) brought me into the world of computer gaming. Oh yeah, then there was this little game called X-Wing...

Don't get me started on X-Wing or Tie Fighter for that matter. Both of those were the pinnacle of my gaming existence when I wasn't married.

I still prefer TTDPatch over OpenTTD. Probably because I was "raised" on it. OpenTTD has that open-source irritation with it where if you want to go deeper than just standard play, you need to dig deep into everyone else's minds to figure out what they're talking about.

I really liked the "Top Gun: Fire at Will" modeled after Movie with Tom Cruise. Having the back-seater say funny stuff was a blast. This game was DOS based and only worked on Windows 3.1/95/98.

Hmmm interesting to hear about this TTDPatch. Might need more information.

Open TTD is like "We want to keep as close as possible to the original TTD with some bugfixes," whereas TTDPatch is like a massive pick-your-mods system wherein you use a text file full of flags/switches (or, more easily, a program that changes it for you) to choose from a myriad of different changes you want to make or leave in the game. The only downside to it is that it uses the stock AI, which is more retarded than a wet paper bag full of rocks and nails.
Seriously, watching it is funny. You can watch it build, say, a railroad track. It'll come upon a tiny dent in the landscape that it needs to go around. Instead of backing up, turning, then scooting around the side of it, most of the time it will loop all the way back, build a bridge over the track it just layed, loop around again, and end up on the other side.

Actually they are working on a complete rebuilt of WC 3 or 4 (forgot which and forgot which game they use as a base for the mod - prolly freespace though). I will try to find the page for it...

HAHAHA

I like the new AI's you can download in OpenTTD; if you aren't careful they will overwhelm you and before long you are way down on the list and they have beaten your brains in with the sheer volume of traffic and traffic orders they can create. You can also create IF/THEN statements for vehicle orders. Along the lines of IF a vehicle is X years old THEN replace it automatically and you can tell it to go to the service depot for repairs automatically after so many years in service that repair cycle can be turned around quicker.

TTDPatch has the same functionality but in a much rougher, more automatic form.
