Title: B-17G Ride, Awesome Experience
Post by: elc7367b on March 23, 2010, 01:42:38 PM
I had the opportunity to fly in a B-17G following an air show at Davis-Monthan AFB.  To make it even better, the ride was shared with me by my wife and daughter.  This was an experience that will never be forgotten.

The feeling you will never forget when you get to ride in something like that. I got lucky myself and rode in a B24, I'll never forget that day.

The Collings Foundation B-24?  I rode on that, too, and it was the ride of a lifetime.

I still almost can't believe that places sell rides on these aircraft.

Managed a ride on the CAF B17 "Sentimental Journey" last airshow season. Fantastic experience.

About $400 for half an hour.  Not only do you ride in it, you get to -- in flight -- go everywhere in the plane, from the tail gunner position to the nose gunner position and everything in between.  Truly amazing.

This is what it is like:

Ride of a lifetime!

The Collings Foundation tours the country with their B-24, B-17, and P-51 (sometimes also with their B-25).  The P-51 is a lot more expensive to ride in ($2200 for half an hour).

Schedule so far (which cities they are at and when) is here:

Didn't that one used to be The All American?

She started as the All American, then became The Dragon and His Tail and is now Witchcraft.

The Coillings Foundation travels around the country with their aircraft.  Last year I got to get inside both the B-17 and the B-24.  Quite an experience.  The B-24 is smaller than I thought, probably because the fuselage is narrow (I liked the B-17 better.)  I was too cheap to pay for a ride last year, but I regret that decision.  This year will be different...
