Title: How long did your windows 7 update take?
Post by: Jayhawk on March 25, 2010, 04:59:09 PM
Updating from vista 64bit to 7 64 bit. Am now 6 hours into installation (second try).  First few steps took about an hour, been on the last step of transfering files and settings for 5 hours.  How long should I wait before I give up and try to find the problem?

What are the computer specs? If you're using an old ATA100 hard drive, I could see it taking a while.

Would probably get a better response in the Hardware & Software forum.

Yeah, I guess I was hesitant because I'm not really asking about Aces High, I suppose Skuzzy can move it if he feels it'll help.

Computer was bought at the end of last year, Dell XPS.  I'm not at it now so can't remember specs but it's a good computer.  Going to just it run for a while and see what happens.

The Hardware/Software forum isn't only for AH related things, you can talk & ask about anything that has to do with computer Hardware/Software, and like OOZ said you'll get better responses in there.

Good to know, thanks.

Second attempt was frozen at the same point my first attempt was, so I googled it and...

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975253/en-us#LetMeFixItMyselfAlways (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975253/en-us#LetMeFixItMyselfAlways)

Upgrade has been freezing at 62% on certain computers, restoring Vista to double check that is the problem then should be able to fix it.

Seems like there's always some really awkward, hinkey fix to every Windows problem. That's a prime example :D

The HW&SW forum would better be described as "Aces High users discuss hardware and software" rather than "Advice and questions about hardware and software used in conjunction with AH." The latter more fits with the Technical Support forum.

Took me about 30 minutes from starting with a clean hard drive and installing fresh.

The first time I didn't realize it but I had a couple of problems...my LG DVD drive wouldn't recognize the disks even though they did fine with the RC candidate disks that I had. The versions I bought from M$ and Newegg would not read at all. AND I had a brand new Seagate drive that was dying right out of the box but didn't know it then. Now it all runs silky, smooth!

System is almost 2.5 years old, I set it up last OS reinstall with 3 partitions.

Formated E drive, and installed Win 7 ultimate in something like 45 min.
Another 45 min to an hour to install stuff like Firefox, glary utilities (take control of the start menu)
Threatfire, etc.

Setup as dual boot so I can still fly and do my usual stuff in XP pro, but when I have time and interest I can drive in Win 7 and learn how to tame it.

Doing an upgrade without cleaning out the old garbage is just asking for trouble IMO.

Ohhh and yes I still have a partition free if I want to try linux again. Which I like to do every couple years.
One of these times they'll have enough of it put together that I can make the switch.

Clean install of Windows 7 64bit from Vista 64bit took 50mins.

I have OS running on a dedicated 80GB drive and two 500GB drives just for data. Downloaded Windows7 onto one of the data drives. Ran setup from that drive told it to do clean install on the C: 80GB drive, was all over in less then a hour.

The best and easiest install of OS I've ever done, didn't have to do a thing after clicking setup. And everything working perfect without a single CTD yet.

As for increase in game perf etc, AH it's impossible to tell as it has such extremely low requirements but 3D tests of Crysis showed difference is very marginal.

I'm happy enough that it didn't destroy performance on existing hardware (*cough*Vista*cough*) that I don't mind a lack of increased performance. :) Their schmaultzy commercials about the interface working better have some truth to them too, though it is a bit "bubbly" for my tastes. And I still can figure out how to get it to stop remembering my searches in Explorer.

It hides a lot of stuff that I'm used to.
No more "my computer" etc.
But then I'm still learning to drive in it.

I dislike not being able to customize my quick launch bar the way I used to.
(always had HD shortcuts, dvd, etc where they were handy)

It does seem stable, and it isn't a huge hardware pig the way Vista was.
I don't know that you will see any big benefit vs XP unless you had a totally hosed up system in XP.
But at least it doesn't require 2-3x system hardware to do the same job.

I love W7, hated Vista, loved XP.

Mine took about an hour and a half I think to install on my QC, and maybe 2 hours for my DC (both upgrades). However I ended up wiping both drives and starting fresh.

A clean install for me only took 25 minutes to complete. It was easy as peanut butter cream pie.

Well I did get mine to finish the other day, the 62% bug struck on my computer but the Microsoft fix was extremely easy and solved the problem.  I probably should have wiped my drives and started clean, but it worked.  Not sure exactly how long it took because I just left it going at night, was at least three hours in when I went to bed.

You still can, but they become pinned "under" Explorer, making them just about as many clicks away as just using the start menu. So I see what you're saying.

As for the missing My Computer, if you mean the missing link on the desktop, just right click it on the start menu and select "Show on Desktop."

About 30 minutes with no problems. Bought a netbook computer with Windows 7 Basic. Sorry, couldn't resist. I'm not about to mess with actually switching to Windows 7 Starter from a notebook Vista or a desktop XP.

I switched from windows xp to win7 64 bit.  took about 1/2 hr.  Have reinstalled win7 several times and it only takes  30 to 40 min.  u cannnot upgrade from xp to win 7 must be a fresh installation.  I also installed  win7 in a laptop took less than 1 hr including downloading all the updates.

Thanks for the tip.

For now I just have shortcuts to my drives sitting on desktop.
Yes you can "pin" them but it pretty much is a waste as you noted.

The other thing that 7 does is rearrange drive letters.
So if I have 3 partitions on my drive, C, D, E, and 7 happens to be installed on E, when it boots into 7, it turns drive E into C. Shuffling the deck so to speak. Its just nastiness  and confusion that doesn't need to be.

I had that happen in Windows XP as well. Maybe it has to do with boot.ini or some such file.
