Title: Roger wilco new version has PROBLEMS!
Post by: Ghosth on August 31, 2001, 11:22:00 PM
Roger wilco has a new version out that lets people "surf" into an existing Aces High RW channel. We found this out the hard way with some real class acts like "circe" turning our RW channel into pure mayhem during the snapshot.

Apparently when you use AH to auto join a channel. That channel shows up on the channel list in RW, and ANYONE can just surf in.

Can we get a work around for this HT?

Or are we all going to be forced to join password protected base stations to talk via RW without interuption????

I'm also testing the  www.rogerwilco.com/ah (http://www.rogerwilco.com/ah)  base
it doesn't seem to be visible on the channel list.

We were in the snapshot and were using two different VOX chans for the TBM flight and hellcat flight.  I was on a different VOX channel (so a different IP addy in the RW side of things) at first.  I got shot down (I was really dumb and pulled up into the con when I had hardly any E. please, someone tell me NOT to do that anymore!!!) so i decided to switch over to the TBM flight to listen in there.  Seamless switch in AH like it usually is, but there was a lot of non AH comm traffic going on.  Somehow, whoever was hosting the RW session for that VOX channel had gotten on the main RW directory service, and people were just joining in from that.

I tried to see what would happen if I started a session in game, so I head over to the MA, get VOX set like I always do for squad comms.  No one joins in.  I install RW on another PC at home, and check the directory...  I'm not there at all.  Ghosth joins in on my session.  We fiddle with things, and come to the conclusion that maybe I didn't start broadcasting to the RW directory because I'm behind a firewall.  The new feature of RW is called Base Station Hosting, and it uses a different port than RW uses for voice data.  That new port isn't mapped on my firewall, so that's a possibility as to why I wasn't showing on the list and the other guys were.  Also, maybe the base hosting doesn't happen automatically, so you're not on the directory by default.

anyone else with the new RW version noticing party crashers or other interesting connection stuff?

Yeah, you  :)

Creamo and I had some guy pop in babbling nonsense.  Thought it was sally at first, since it was nonsensical, but was nobody I recognized when I looked at the list.  Happened twice, then not for a while after that til you said something on private.

Hey Nifty...what port does RW use for hosting?  I've got a firewall and would like to open that port up.

Ah... so that's what was happening.

Can't remember who that was who came on with a real toejamty mic and blabbered some weird toejam. I just hit the kick button because it did sound like Sally and one dipshit is enough to listen too.

is there any way to require a PASSWORD as a temp workaround, we could try and set a standard Aces High password like "HITECH"?

Or you could check that little box which says "hide this channel from public directory" on the Create screen. There's another one on the Base Station tab.

Flakbait, that only works if you Host RW Before you start AH.

If you use AH's autojoin you have NO control over who is host. Plus I don't see how you can password protect it, or hide it from the server list.

HiTech can you shed any light on this please??

Squads will eventually all go to password protected base stations. But even that costs us, how many times have I tuned into mag 33's RW & fly with the guys? Or had them tune into the Mongrels and fly with us?

This new RW version just killed the whole concept of RW in aces high where you could switch channels quick & easy.

Unless or until we can keep those channels from showing up on the server list. We are stuck with 11 year old idiots and worse messing up our comms.

FYI I tracked down the goof from last night, named "Circe". His ip is 166.90.213.78, appears to be in the Chicago area.

AH is enabled to make direct and easy use of RW but it's not really incorporated in AH itself. When the Gator fiasco arose we ran into the ame thing.
When I launched the reg ver of AH yesterday RW activated my browser and brought up the news about the latest update. I read what the update was and I passed as it offered nothing I wanted. And being remindful if of the Gator spyware episode I don't hink I'll ever trust the parent company for RW so I'll not be updating RW anytime too soon, if ever.

It boils down to 'user beware', read the fine (and bold) print and maybe it's time for some to think of alternatvies like team sound or battlecom instead.

So far the most reliable version of RW for my system has been .054 and I have been using it with a old SB16 ISA card. If someone would like to post it so it can be downloaded I will be happy to send it to you. You can also tell me how to post it so it can be downloaded and I will be glad to do that. It was the version that AH started using when they started the automatic RW channel thingy.

it looked like the base station was trying to run on port 3783 (one up from the regular RW port, just in case I remembered it wrong.)

One solution is to just alt-tab out of AH when you start up and make sure RW is set not to show in the directory.  Or if you're using the latest beta clients for AH, you have to start RW first, so just remember to make sure it won't be showing in the directory.   :)

Phew, I noted this new "update" sucks too.

I switched to BattleCom, which is also now GameVoice.  Having great luck with it.

I Agree Ghosth....

We have been experiencing this almost every night! I seems to be a common problem on our squad RW chanel. At first I thought it was the FDB's having fun until someone started talking with a Sqandanavian accent to us. Vega thought they were inviting us to a "Hot Tub Party" but I think they were yelling obsenities. Hmmm.. maybe it was the FDB's!   :D

Really this is becoming a problem!

After some testing down with Ozark hosting on his old mk 1c version. It appears that channels hosted on the older versions do NOT show up in the channel list.

I'd like it if some others could double check this if at all possible.

We did NOT test to see if auto host in game showed up on the older version.

While I applaud RW for their incorporation of the base station into the basic RW. I really think this whole "channel surf" idea is a bad one. One that is going to have long term consequences for Roger Wilco.

After all, would you like it if someone could "surf" into your cellular phone calls?

Last evening I logged on (and RW started as always on our squad channel) except... (as it was rather Rudely pointed out to me) it wasn't a Knight channel that it logged on to... it was a Bishop channel. This is our regular squad channel (132) I didn't tune anything, I didn't do anything other than start AH as I always do. I am not sure what version of RW I am using... but I haven;'t downloaded anything recentlty.

Friday night myself and my squad mates all logged into the MA , our RW was tuned to our usual squad channel.
Apparently we joined a channel being used in ANOTHER ARENA ( I take it the 'snapshot' was NOT in the MA )
I Alt-Tabed and checked who was on....Ghosth, you were one of them, so I am assuming the channel we joined is the same one you are discussing.
This was at about 11pm Friday ( US time ).
I dont know if this helps at all in sorting this problem out, I just figure the more info, the better.

{AFAIK, everyone in my squad was using the old version of RW, not the update }

I swapped back to Ic (after having to kick about 50 people off rw in one night), if you're looking for it you can still find it here (http://www.resounding.com/products/downloads/rw_win_dload.html).
