I have noticed alot of aircraft these days have seat covering made out of sheepskin. So I've been wondering if the sheepskin actually helps or is it just there for the feel of it?

Well I know a lot of sheep skins are made to put on beds for a number of reasons?

Well, it seems to wear really well for the sheep.

In the USAF, average sortie durations increased a lot in the last decade or two, and the sheepskin seat covers really help cut down fatigue. They even reduce minor skin injuries (think bedsores and rashes) by allowing some air to circulate between the seat and the pilot. The reason why sheepskin is used instead of other materials such as foam is because the sheepskin has good compression qualities so during an ejection, the seat doesn't get a running start before pushing the pilot up the rails, like it would if a foam or other air filled cushion was used. Giving the seat even a 1/2 inch head-start before the pilot starts moving can be enough to break the spine or femur just above the knee.

I was thinking about it and wondered if static electricity was part of the reason.

I see, starts to make for seance now.
thanks

While sheepskin is effective in preventing pregnancy, it was recognized early on that the membrane was infective against sexually passed infections.
Oops. Wrong sheepskin.

Actually, when I traveled over 2,000 miles (my trip to Sturgis, SD) on my motorcycle one summer, I met up with a group of "old timers" who advised me to buy a sheepskin cover for my seat. I thought it was a bunch of BS. But after one particular hard day of riding, I decided to give it a try. It was worth it. I don't know why or how it made a difference, but it did. I also bought a pair of Erwin Rommel goggles. Those two things made my trip more enjoyable. So, for a motorcycle, I would recommend it. A car, truck, or airplane seat.....not so sure.

I know the USAAF used to use "eiderdoune" (I have no clue how to spell it in english, but in Icelandic it is Æðadúnn) for their aircraft/gear some years back. I thought it was for insulation, but it may have been the seat as well. It is incredibly expensive and has some interesting thermal and structural properties. Any clue?
