Title: busted mobo
Post by: minke on March 31, 2010, 05:30:02 PM
Turned on my comp this evening and it wouldnt POST. Its a biostar tpower I45 so I checked the onboard display. It reads a 9A error code, which, from what the interweb tells me, is that the mobo is busted (something to do with the roms) some people with this error get 1 POST in 3 maybe. I get nothing.
I've tried using the bios jumper and removing the battery, tried another psu, took apart and rebuilt (even blasted with compressed air) nothing happening. I had it for a while now,so probably wont get a replacement under warranty. Was just wondering if anyone had some tricks up their sleeve to get a bit of life out of it.
I've ordered an asus P5Q as a replacement, but it wont arrive until tuesday. Annoyingly I have 2 places nearby, (scan and advancetec) but i'm working until wednesday so will have to wait. I really want to fly, so pretty desperate for any ideas you guys may have.

Is it powering up at all?

If not check the power supply first.
If its not that it sounds like the MB is gone. Sounds kinda like what happened to me a couple of years ago.

Could be something with the display, by the sounds of it it's not the monitor but if possible it's always easy(and worth it) to swap out a different monitor and cable to see if that was the problem. It could all be the video card if the monitor is getting no display. I took a look to try to find the exact wording of the 9A Error Code but it didn't seem to be in the manual for whatever reason although there was an A9 listed but that didn't seem related in the least.

99 times out of 100, if it's not the mother board or power supply, it's the ram when a system won't post.

Pull ALL the cards and unplug all the storage devices/fans etc that run off the power supply except the motherboard of course, and see if it will POST (You'll get beeps without a video device).
If it still don't start, pull all the RAM, and try it with one module at a time (still with all extra stuff unpowered).

If it still doesn't start, then you're stuck - but you might find a RAM module has gone bad, or a bad device is drawing the power supply down.

Judging from reports biostar has had some kind of defects in CMOS chips or something as many people seem to complain about boot problems and having to order a 19 buck chip from the manufacturer.

New Asus mother board arrived today. Fitted in 15 minutes-ish and had to use the driver disc. With my old mobo, windows 7 didnt need it, just found everything on its own. Anyhoo system is nice and sprightly, even boots faster. I also decided to remove norton, even tho it aint let me down, and installed ESET smart security. It looks good so far, much less intrusive. Glad I took the advice on here for AV software.

I would check ASUS website for any updates for that board. I never use the CD always research and use up to date drivers. Although the newest are not always the best that's why you need to research. Glad to hear you are back up and running.
