Title: World of Tanks
Post by: Ack-Ack on April 01, 2010, 04:36:44 PM
Has anyone heard about World of Tanks?  Stumbled across it one a gaming news site, the screenshots look pretty good.  It's a free to play WW2 tank combat MMO and from what I've seen from the screenshots, it seems to German vs. Soviet.  The company that makes it, Wargaming.net is a talented European indie studio, my company published their last game Order of War that turned out to be a pretty decent WW2 RTS.  Got some high hopes for this game and it looks like it's going to be rather fun.

I enjoyed RO's tank battles (depending on the map).  However, the infantry controls for that game are horrid.

Thanks for the heads up AKAK, I'll have to keep an eye out for this one.  I've been looking for a decent Tank game ever since Panzer Elite came out.

I'm gonna play... but 60 tanks in 1 game is certainly not an MMO, no matter how they try to advertise it. Adding in persistent xp and character upgrades doesn't make it massive.

It's bigger than any gv fight in the MA....

AH2 is an airplane game that just happens to have tanks. Significant difference.

A more direct comparison would be to look at AH2 vs IL2... and IL2 calling itself an MMO game becacse it supports 64 players.

But it does meet the established 'criteria' for a game to be considered as a MMO.  It's a persistent world, coupled with the XP leveling and quasi-RPG features but the main part is that it is a persistent world that supports multi-player.  I know, the gaming industry criteria is silly and contradictory in some areas but that's what the industry has deemed what a MMO is.

A few years back, some players tried to get an AH forum put on MMORPG.com and were told by the site mods that AH didn't meet the established criteria because it did not feature a persistent world.  Silly, I know.

Neat. Okay, so persistent world... hmmm. How the hell does that work with a pop cap of 60? iirc the industry standard for prime time is something like 15 or 20% of your player base, so even at 20%, you're only at 300 real player accounts per persistent server... unless those characters can travel from server to server... in which case it's not very persistent, because you wouldn't exist in the other.

Serious holes in logic going on here just to slap on the MMO title for sales =P

though now it is time to fire up some Steel Beasts tonight!

Looks good, will certainly try it out if it's anything like the videos, realistic and not a lame camp fest like AH2 or WW2OL ground warefare.

Cheers,
