Title: ASUS Laptop Problem
Post by: redman555 on April 06, 2010, 08:19:22 PM
Ok, so I noticed the other night my FPS dropped, so I looked in the bottom right corner, my laptop is saying im on power save mode, so I go into power settings and its saying that I am in high performance.....Why would it say one thing in the bottom right corner, and something different in the power options?

Here is a screen shot of what I mean.  I have an Asus Laptop.  I called tech support but they said they are so backed up they would have to call ME back lol.

Click the picture so it zooms in more and is easier to read.  I have gone through change plan settings like 20 times and cant find anything wrong in there.

When I click the increase performance button on the bottom right it goes to do it, sits there increasing performance for like 45sec-1 min and then nothing happens.

OK WIERD:  I unplugged it and plugged it back in and now its on high performance?

It sounds like the CPU is going in to "power save mode" there is a small program called SpeedswitchXP and you can use it to override the settings and force the CPU to run @ full speed all of the time..
the footprint is around 3.3 K when it running.

You can find it here:

He's running Windows Vista or 7...that speed switch won't work properly in either.

Redman, did you happen to get into the bios and see if there is a way to turn off hardware based power management? Some systems have it and some don't...depends on the mobo. One thing about laptops, especially the ones with Intel Speedstep is even in "high performance" mode, that cpu is not running 100%...somewhere between 90% to 97%.

Check and see if there are any power savings settings in the bios...and disable what you can.

your processor can decrease its power by throttling it down, if temperatures are too high.

Well there's your problem.  :D

Asus are quite good in my experience, and FYI are an OEM manufacturer for the likes of Apple, Sony, HP etc.

My Asus laptop came with Windows "Vista" infecting it, which I didn't like at all. It was very easy to put PcLinuxOs2009.1 on it, which I like much better. Good machine now! (Runs several versions of Aces High under Wine and Cedega).
