The throttle essentially varies the proproller pitch, because the engine and propeller stay at a constant RPM.  

Open the throttle and more engine Horsepower (Hp) is provided.  The propeller increase pitch providing more thrust.  Increased engine Hp output requires more fuel to be consumed.  

Less throttle, less pitch, less thrust, less Hp, less fuel.
