I believe that increasing the amount of kills it takes to get your name up in lights in the text from 2 to 3 kills would have several benefits. This would lead to better gameplay, with people staying for longer than 2 minutes before running. Also, this would discourage spraying and HOing, because you can spray and get 2 kills before running out of ammo most of the time, and one can survive a couple of HOs if they're reasonably lucky. This also would push players to become better, which, in turn, would improve the overall quality of the game. Due to the fact that only two kills are required to receive notice, many people play with the mindset that they can do the bare minimum and be rewarded. Too many times over the years have I been cheated out of a fight just so someone run and land their 2 kills.
Edit: 1,000th post :)

Only if the ID, operating sector, and dot-dar of people with over 5 kills+safe landing last sortie, is highlighted !
:D

Pannono I don't believe any of your assertions are accurate. Of course if you can actually read other peoples minds then you already know that. :D
-
Better idea...
Lets link it to ENY. The higher ENY the more kills needed.
ENY 19, need 19 kills for name in lights. If that isn't incentive to even out numbers nothing will do it. :P :D
-
I'd rather they set a minimum waterline for the bomber damage name-in-lights. I could care less if a guy egged a town building in a set of Lancasters.
-
More kills needed leads to timidness.

Not necessarily. It will for some that are timid to begin with but those that do enjoy to fight, you won't see them change their style to reflect the changes to the kills landed system message.
ack-ack

genius idea, i vote for this too :aok

It wouldn't be so great for the people that rarely land 2 kills. I think Lusche has the numbers on this.
-
I say eliminate the "name in lights", or at minimum eliminate the "You shot down gayro", or "WeeArr shot you down". :D
Either way, if there is any way to reduce the number of system messages that cycle across the chat bar I'm all in favor of it.
-
I play till run out of gas or ammo and need to rtb. And my record still 7 ho kills in one flight. People will fly howver they want hoing, vulching, picking or just plain fighting. Imho most people that land lots of kills do it by either picking or vulching :)

LOL... not really...
But what I do know is that in LW, the average player has ~0.2 kills per sortie. Considering that the average player has also a K/D of about 0.3 only, you can see that for many, if not most players, landing 2 kills is actually quite a feat. ;)

I like to know who I shot down, and who shot me down too. A lot of times I like to discuss the fight with the dude I was just in with. Where did I go wrong, or what did you do there, or that type of thing. Met some good guys that way, and helped improve my flying to boot. I know it's abused by people being donkeys on 200 a lot of times, but really, it can be a fantastic tool also.

Shoudn't the average be near 1 or do lots of people crash into the ground?

No.
It just that most players are cannon fodder for the very few "top" pilots in game.
In any given LW tour, 50% of all players get a K/D less than 0.3. Only 20% of all player end up having a k/D of 1.0 or better in fighter mode, less than 10% get a K/D of 2.0 or better.
The numbers for kills per sortie are similar.
The numerical majority of players get airborne, flies around and gets shot down by one of the guys doing 2-5 kills per sortie ;)

Getting rusty in algebra but won't the average d/k ratio never be above .5?

Quick hypothetical example:

Of course, the "average" number is a bit misleading, that's why I gave some actual threshold numbers.
Some actual numbers for tour 118 for all players with at least 1 sortie in fighter mode:

As you can see, the majority of players were more victims than killers.

surely plenty of guys got more than 10-1 KD?

The % numbers are rounded. The actual number was 0.437%

I'd lose it altogether, not that I ever land :)
I know I've often seen guys leave a fight in the middle of it, race home, land, and get their wtg, often leaving other guys hanging in that same fight as the desire to land the kill is more important to them.
I understand that some folks need some sort of incentive, but in the worst case scenario the name in lights message creates a lot of timid cartoon pilots
-
So they leave guys hanging in a fight where nobody dies and the reward is the fight?
If a timid pilot leaves the fight it seems like all you lost is some bait. :D
-
You are supposed to land? Let em have their name in lights for whatever. I will encourage all to fight until you are out of bullets or gas. It's the most fun!
-
For me there should be a 2 perk thresshold before any other numerics are considered. ie Fighter/attacker = 2 kills + 2 perks prior to attaboy announcement. Its clear that Attaboys are motivational so why not use them to encourage greater variety of ac in combat by rewarding high ENY drivers appropriately.
-
I would like being able to increase the limit just for myself.
Make is player controllable with a slider in "options" what his own minimum requirement for getting into the lights should be.
I'm rather embarrassed when I land just two kills in a Tempest or La-7 and get a bunch of WTG's for that.
-
Increase to 5 kills for name in lights.

I'f I'm getting critically low on fuel, am out of ammo, have serious damage, or a gaggle of red cons at high alt appears trying to pick me, I'm off. If and how many kills I do have is completely irrelevant. I try to land every sortie, even with 0 kills. Name in lights is not what is driving me, (unless it's like 5 kills in a ENY 40 plane - I'm not above trying to showoff :D)
I will always try to help someone in trouble, but if I clear someone's 6, but if he just flies back into that horde of 12 red cons he better not complain openly about me not "helping him" again ;)

+1
Where you set your flight options ( tracers, stall delimiter, auto takeoff ),
make an option to be prompted with a popup ( like accepting a gunner ) when you end sortie: "Would you like to announce your mission results: y/n"
Applies to fighter/bomber/field gun/GV.
<edit> Ug.. um.. second thought, it may not be such a good idea. Those that choose to announce all their kills may be ridiculed relentlessly on range/200. No need to fuel more drivel on the text buffers.

I actually kind of like this idea. Would the message be changed though?
So and So has earned XX perks with XX kills in a FW190-A5 ?
-
Increase to 5 kills for name in lights.
Im up for that but instead have it say "Ace"
-

While I wouldn't hate the concept, I think something like that should be in ADDITION to... Or perhaps even better, if the game tracked since your last death... as in :
Ace XXXXXX was shot down after collecting 8 kills since his last departure.
Honestly, the only people changing the kill streak message from 2 to 3 affects, is the pilots crappy enough to struggle getting 2 kills in the first place in a sortie. We want to discourage them from flying more?

Huh? System messages are the most intelligent things cycling through the text buffer.

".squelch 6" turns off system messages.

Interesting.
Something else to consider: What if it didn't start scoring anything until after the 2nd kill, you can still get your name in lights for the 2 kills, but you would not get any score.
That surely would encourage some to fight, rearm and fight to at least get 3.
Besides, then we could get a laugh out of the ones landing 2 kills that didn't get any score.... :devil
-
I land even if I do not get any kills, for instance, if I go on a buff hunting sortie, and do not come accross any buffs and run low on fuel, I go home and land. I land with no kills, with one kill, two kills and so on...If I get damaged, I always try and get back to a base and land. If its because the system messages spam your text bar, squelch them. But there is nothing wrong with the current system imho. The only thing I do not do, is re arm, I just get a new ship.
-
Could I get my name in lights for an assist....I use .50s ya know :bolt:

Interesting. I'm struggling to crack .5, though it's been higher for brief periods(even over 1 for short spans). That means a couple of things.
1. I'm a relative newbie (about a year) and a punk-ayuss (it hurts to admit it). This I acknowledge readily. I'm a humble and grateful student of the game.
2. if the average k/d is .3, that means a small contingent of players are generating outsized kill numbers, confirming my suspicion that there are Aces and Targets in this game. I think of my own experience with, for example, Wolfala. I think I'm 0-5 or 0-6 against him. There are a half-dozen others I can name that probably account for a grossly disproportionate number of my deaths. You know who you are.
3. I'm not so out of the norm to be happy with landing 2-3 kills.
-

Yes there are.
BUT... many, if not most of those players at the bottom are 2 weekers, doing only a few sorties before their trial runs out.
I may do a detailed analysis next month taking into account number of sorties and other factors, but I'm not sure when I will find the opportunity to do the necessary improvements on my stats program
-
I like Lusche more now, I've never considered myself in the top 10%
:x

Lusche your quite a stat hoe and I love you for it. I don't know why but almost pointless statistics make me happy ^.^

Not to highjack but, how in hell did you acquire parolee status? I can't get arrested in this town.

Things used to get pretty spicy in general discussion, a few times I managed to get banned for a week for my stupid behaviour and breach of forum rules. I learnt my lesson slowly

I read what you're saying and hear "salvo after salvo of f-bombs and insults fit to make sailor's blush". At least I hope that's what it was.

I believe the point of this thread is that the OP believed something was broken.
