Title: The Calliope..
Post by: stephen on April 20, 2010, 12:36:30 PM
60 4.5 inch rockets, fired in salvo by one or two tanks should have a hell of an impact on towns.
That is if you can manage to get the ungainly contraption in range without being spotted...

Next thing you know we'll have mine layers and flail tanks, lol.

Kudos on the upcoming addition.

I'm more interested in seeing how intimidating it is when an oncoming Il-2 suddenly has 60 rockets flying past it. :)

I have a picture of a Sherman with the rocket tubes on top of it. I will look for it and post on here.

I imagine it will take a bit to find the range of those rockets, much the same as the way we had to learn the ranges on the rockets that the SdKfz 251 when it first came out.  God was it a pain to figure it out

But it should add a new dimension to the attack of a town.  I wonder how many perkies it will cost if any?

The SDK rocket angles were fixed. That made it hard to determine how far you had to be.

This one pitches up and down, like the PT rockets. You can fire 1-2 rockets to figure out how much angle you need then walke the rest across a town once you find it.

I believe in the SDK 251, the lower elevation setting is approximately d1.5k and the higher elevation I heard was d3.0k.  Never tried the higher elevation but when I've used the lower elevation, d1.5k was about the distance the rockets were traveling because I was using a squadron mate's GV as an aiming reference point and remember him screaming at me to stop.

Yes this is how I learned to range them.  I use a another vehicle as a range finder in the TA.  Once I got it figured out I stopped using the damn thing.   Go figure that one? :headscratch:

LOL, same here.  I guess it's just isn't as fun when you don't have a squadron mate screaming for the love of Gawd for you to stop raining rockets down on him.

LOL, was thinking the same thing... Might be a sure cure for the Lankstuka'ites too.. Oh yeah!
I wonder how the damage model will work with this thing?   They were unarmored, how would this thing react to being straffed..
Would the rockets jam in the launch tubes when launched because of the jagged holes?  What happens when a rocket has a perforated casing? Solid fuel motors burn from the point of ignition(rear) to the front... What happens when it reaches a perforation in the side of the rocket motor? It seems that it would start going in ANY direction, EXCEPT where you aimed it? What if the launcher is hit by HE fire, will they detonate, or chain fire, burn?  Just thinkin?

Or, should I just not ask these kinds of questions?  :rofl

Im sure that an HE, or machine gun hit in the rocket tubes would at-least result in an un-commanded ignition, or a VERY large explosion at the most.

I think we are underestimating the possible effectivness of this configuration..., 60 rockets has the ability to do ALOT of damage if properly aimed..., and will mark the beginning of true artillery in Aces High.
Consider that this weapon is fixed to the barrel of a tank, and the implications become apparent emediatly.

Accurate fire WILL be possible as this rocket (unlike any other in the game) will be launchable from a tank that has a graduated tank gunsite...
The whole ground game is about to be rocked! :rock

hey man i actually have to say ive used a 251 to take ack down in a VBase and then to try and sneak the base... Went up a cliff, sat there, ranged with one rocket and killed all 3 ack. Then went for the map room... didnt get the take though. someone shot me

Seems like this will be pretty fun, being able to actually "aim it" is going to :rock

I think it will be a "use it or loose it" kind of thing tho... Fragile, vulnerable, dangerous to the user as well..
A good animation of the launcher detonating when hit would be cool.. You know, a nice flaming blast, with rockets shooting out everywhere, detonating wherever they land  :aok  Blow up your buddies too, oh killshooter, forgot..  :bolt:

Must remember, 60 105howitzer sized warheads, and the rocket motors to propel them, in an unarmored nest.. Like having a small ammo dump, right on top of you..   If planes are around, ya better be ready to jettison, or die...

But that brings a new thought!  If a direct hit from an enemy Calliope rocket, will give a very spectacular death, this would make for a new event.. 1v1 Calliope Duelling!      Counterbattery fire, anyone?

and the rockets lethality (in WWII) were that of a 105MM howitzer exploding  :O  :O  :x so its got to be at least 2 per building or even 1  :x
