Title: PSU Dead
Post by: jerkins on April 20, 2010, 04:39:55 PM
I think my PSU has hit the wall.  No power from case power on switch.  The Mobo standby light is on.  I jumped the power pins to check that the case switch was not the issue, no signs of life.  I tried to check the voltages with a multimeter while plugged into the Mobo, could not get a reading.  Should I jump the PS-ON pin to ground and check voltages while unplugged?

The PSU I have is a pc power and cooling 750W silencer.  This one I believe - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817703029

Any thoughts before I bite the bullet at buy a new PSU?  If i do have a purchase a new one I am looking towards this one -

Corsair is certainly a good PSU, Historically they hold up pretty well. So does your current PSU, did you buy a "recertified" one or get the regular (which has a 5 year warranty)?

The other problem could be that your MOBO may have crapped out on ya too, take out your powersupply and take it to your local comp store and they have a tester they can plug into it that will create a load on it, like testing a car battery, they will probably charge you a bench fee or test fee but most places will allow you to put that towards the purchase. Then you will know for sure if it is the PSU or not. Take out you CMOS battery for 10 secs. and replace it also remove your RAM and try to start without see what happens. Could be a lot of things, start with the cheapest and easiest fixes and test methods first I always say. IMO.

I have that Corsair PSU, jerkins.  It is rock solid but there are A LOT of wires - enough for two computers.  Make sure you have a roomy case.  :D

Look for a modular PSU.

While modular allows you to manage cables more easily, it does have its own disadvantages when it comes to transfer of electricity.

Maybe... but the two best and most efficient PSUs available are modular.
