Title: P-39 head positions....Too limited?
Post by: Vinkman on April 21, 2010, 01:02:01 PM
I've noticed in the P-39 that the head position seems to be limited in its forward movement to about half way to the instrument panel. Can that range be expanded? There are large blind spots in that plane due to the horseshoe collar that supprts the canopy, which more movement would aleviate. I don't feel more range forward would be unnatural since the pilot would be able to move his head much forward in the real plane than he can in the game. Also, if you're checking it, when looking back and moving my head position backwards it doesn't seem like I can press my face against the glass, which I should be able to.  This would also improve visibility greatly.

Can the range of motion be expanded to the cockpit limits?

I agree, this is also very noticeable in the La-5/7.

I've been saying this since the P-39 was released.

It seems every time an aircraft is remodeled, the head positions possible seem more limited than they were before as well.

I actually thought they had fixed it a bit with one of the remodeled planes, F4U or La, but I don't recall which.

I'd like to be able to move around more inside a P-39.

Trackir would solve it.

I think it was the F6F that they solved it with.

I have a trackIR! It's great but, frustrating when you look backwards and can't get far enough away from the stucture behind the pilot to see over and around it. Also when looking forward and down, there seems to be a lot more visibility possible if I could get my nose up to the instrument panel to peek over the front corner of the plane. Hope they take a look at it.

Keep in mind pilots in ww2 would not put their nose up to the glass either. Unless they had a really long nose that they were willing to break. Also they couldn't really stand up .  They had seat belts on, pretty sure about that, kinda helpful when they were diving or upside down.  So their view was limited just as it is here.

The new planes are fine. It's the old AH1/early AH2 planes which were modelled with too lenient head movement.

Agreed, and even in the new planes if you really think about it what pilot could twist his/her head completely backwards to look back?  So realistically I would say they are still lenient but make a few concessions for game play.

No, matter of fact it's more realistic than "sims" that don't let you look backward at all.

EDIT: Look over your shoulder. Right now. Your head may not turn all the way around, but your EYES are looking backwards. You can see directly behind yourself, and on top of that have peripheral vision.

No "gameplay concession" there. The only concession would be allowing you to go from rear right, rear, to rear left without an artificial delay of whipping all the way around the other side like IL2 does.

And EVERY body everywhere hates how IL2 has the views set up. It's universal.

Per my above post I had wished for an update to the P-39 view range. The new patch delivers in a big way. Thanks HTC for the attention to this wish.  :aok
