Title: Land mode for new M4
Post by: Chilli on April 21, 2010, 04:20:50 PM
 With the upcoming M4, I would like to see the option to direct rockets to a target within range like available on carrier 5 and 8 inch guns.  Simply, raising and lowering launcher, trying to estimate range like done with PT boats, just doesn't quite hit the target for me.

Okay, so what if this is EZ mode, so is automatic bomber calibration, combat trim, auto climb, .... on and on.....  The simple fact for me, even with land mode, the chance of hitting a specific target will be greatly limited by one's estimation of where on the clipboard map that target is located.  It will however better simulate direction from a battle experienced tank commander.

Haha, HTC has doen it again.  The M4 with the 76mm.  I like this.  The gun is on par with the 85mm of the T34 and the armor is decent.  It will be better than the panzer, can kill the firefly and the T34 and is capable of taking out the tiger from the right distance and direction..  I cant wait.

The 85mm T34 is actually a bit stronger if i recollect. But yes, this will create whole new GV fights. New strategy time!!! woot woot woot! my favorite thing to do!!!

Now if we can only get a pather, jagdpather hetzer and jagdpanzar, king tiger, and M-18 Hellcat, it would bring alot of better gv fights to the game. :)

Yes, the Tank without any added gadgetry is awesome.  However, how many of you besides USRanger have tried to make use of rockets on vehicles?  It is a very cool effect, and ... hear me out.

Enabling "land mode" for rockets will not pose any advantage with any tank vs. tank battle.  Heck, even if it had 160 rockets, I doubt if anyone using this feature would be anymore effective than a 5 inch gunner at hitting any specific target (ie. town buildings, hangars, etc).

It would add more realism.  No reasonable commander would waste valuable rockets, tossing them blindly into the dirt without having some calculation for elevation and direction.

Plain and simple, are the rocket launchers going to be functional or eye candy?

Lushe,

I think what he's asking for is land mode to get the range estimate, then use the gunsight to set elevation.

I wonder if we'll be able to salvo all 60 at once.

Can you say "framerate"?

Depends on which ammunition you compare.  Very similar capabilities.

I think so, but I believe it only shoots about 2 rockets per second so it'll still take half a min to launch them all.

I think the reason that HTC put land mode into the game in the first place was to make carrier guns functional at range beyond any possible gunsight ability.

Lusche, a gunsight is fine if all I am going to do with the thing is run into town or airfield and fire at point blank range.  If you have tried to fire rockets from a PT boat, you would know there is no gunsight.

:headscratch: Sometimes I wonder how we are not playing this game on a typewriter, sitting by the radio, flipping pictures on a wheel.   :old:

actually i'm pretty sure it was 3 per. but most likely i'm wrong...

just goes to show you how crappy Russian guns were in WWII :rofl and 85mm that can't even surpass an American 76mm gun using the same style of ammunition :lol :lol :lol

Added to my wishlist for M4 rockets:  New rocket sound, similar to bomb whistle, in that incoming rockets will be heard, not just the launch sound and impact sound.

I was recalling stories my dad told me about WW2 flying rockets.  When engine stopped they started to fall and could hear the whistling.   That is when they scrambled to hit the dirt.  Because it was dark and rockets weren't seen, they depended on the sound of engine stopping and whistle to estimate when one was close.

Gunsight.

In another thread OOZ pointed out that rockets on another vehicle were aimed using the main gun.  I am okay with this also, if it were just a matter of selecting rockets from the main gun sight, unlike rockets in PT boats which, correct me if I am wrong, have no sight for aiming.

Well, in all technicality, every weapon in Aces High has a "sight" at the very center of the screen if the head position hasn't been moved in the x/y directions. However, rangefinding is the issue.

I've read that the main gun couldn't fire while the Calliope was mounted and that it was aimed using the same sight as the main gun barrel. I doubt they would model it any other way than to be able to launch the rockets from the main gun sight. However, whether that will be a simple red cross (ala the Firefly's smoke rounds), a metered sight (ala standard tank main gun), or a full readout (ala ship guns) remains to be seen.

they already said the main gun will still fire...

Didn't say anything about the in-game one in that respect. :)

Info about firing the main gun from Hunnicutt's definitive book on the Sherman:

"In the original design, the elevation arm was clamped directly to the gun barrel by a split ring and the cannon could not be fired until the launcher was jettisoned.  This feature, combined with jettisoning difficulties, made the tank mounted launchers extremely unpopular with the troops.  Field modifications attempted to correct this condition by removing the elevation arm from the cannon barrel and attaching it to the top of the gun shield.  This permitted the cannon to be fired with the launcher in place, but the smaller movement of the gun mount limited the range of elevation.

"On the T34E1 launcher, the elevation arm was attached to extensions from the gun shield thus retaining the full elevation range and allowing the cannon to be fired without jettisoning the launcher."

I didn't know there were multiple revisions of the launcher.
