The detonator on the head of the shell strikes the tree, shell is detonated in tree.

Yes, most if not all have a charge of some sort of explosives. To the best of my knowledge, anyway.

HEAT use a larger explosive charge than those found in normal AP shells...

No we don't use HEAT.

Most WW2 era AP rounds did carry HE charges.

Armor piercing shell of the APBC
1 Light weight ballistic cap
2 Steel alloy piercing shell
3 Desensitized bursting charge (TNT, Trinitrophenol, RDX...)
4 Fuse (set with delay to explode inside the target)
5 Bourrelet (front) and driving band (rear)

The basic make up of a APBC round used during WW2.

ok wait a sec. :O
this round is suposed to detonate INSIDE the GV!
i take it then that the fuse is not OVERLY sensitive as then it would detonate UPON striking the GV instead of being delayed until penetration had taken place, therefore once again,
how can passage thru a tree foliage trigger the fuse?

To answer your question though..............

WHINE.

AP, HE, who cares?  The issues about trees and shrubs and sheep are far bigger than when a shell explodes.
