Title: Climb to 20,000ft on the AH clock ;)
Post by: juzz on December 13, 1999, 12:17:00 PM
All testing was done with planes loaded with 100% fuel, using 100% power and climbspeed 160mph. I used the cockpit clock for timekeeping(.time 12 00 60)

Plane(guns)                = time
----------------------------------
Bf109G-10(2x13mm,20mm)     = 5'40" (4'50")*(3'57")## <-yikes!
La-5FN                     = 6'10"
Spitfire MkIX(2x20m,2x.50) = 6'30" (5'45")*
C.205(2x12.7mm,2x20mm)     = 7'25"
N1K2-J                     = 7'30"
P-51D                      = 8'10" (6'55")**(6'05")#
FW190A-8(2x13mm,4x20mm)    = 8'45"
F4U-1D                     = 9'00" (8'05")**
----------------------------------
* time with 100% fuel and WEP power
** time with 50% fuel and 100% power
# time with 25% fuel and WEP power
## time with no guns, 25% fuel and WEP power - for fun!

Juzz, are you sure the *magic* clock was right during the MkIX test. I cant believe it takes 6'30" to get to angel twenty. Is the time 6'30" or 5'30"? (I cant read well)

I have a book says 5.7 minutes(5'42") for Spitfire MkIX. The 5 minute generic WEP is causing the problems in performing climb tests. I don't know what they did in real life to get the figures I read in books, but the common explaination is "100% fuel, 100% throttle" - I suspect that only really works for American planes, although the Mustang is an exception in this case it seems. I suspect a WEP climb with 100% fuel would give the time of 7.3 minutes(7'18") I have seen for it. Except there's that 5 minute WEP limit  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)

juzz;

I am not sure WEP is comepletely modeled yet.

If you run out of WEP just hit WEP again and it comes back.

Minotaur: If you hit wep again, it turns off again  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
It seems to be so that you keep wep on for 5 seconds, then it cools down on 10 seconds..
So if you let it cool for 10 seconds, it gives you 5 second boost.

Ughh.. 9 minutes for the HOG  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)
I admitt it got heaps of ammo and lots of fuel... but this ..

I don't know why some people seem to think the Hog could climb well. Climbing better than the F6F and P-47 doesn't mean it's good.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

maybe because i have the AW Hog ENGRAVED into my brain  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Mainly because the Hog was a decent climber.  Nothing great, but above par none the less.  The F6F was a damn fine climber too from the figures I've seen (they range anywhere from 3,100 - 4,400 fpm)  So climbing better than the hellcat is great in it's own right.

Of course I too have the AW corsair ENGRAVED in my head  = (

(choke, cough) 4,400fpm?! That's BF109K-4(4,800+) and Spitfire MkXIV(4,500) territory - no way man! No way!

I think the F4U was certainly an above par climber... for a US carrier fighter. But compared to land-based, non-US fighters it ain't so hot  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Thanks for the effort, but due to the PORKED fuel flow rates (and resultant weight changes in flight), the 20k climb times aren't worth a damn.   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)

Bzzzt! No prize for you funked!   (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif) Offline flight is sans multiplier. If the multiplier was on, then how come none of my results are faster than the performance figures? Hmmm, I wonder how fast a 25% fuel, WEPping Bf109G-10 with no guns can go up in the arena...

I never said it was right!  I just said I've read figures like that.  Personally I hate people who refer ONLY to data, as some data is abnormally twisted and mangled.  Strangly, that's the data most people seem to prefer too....
Case in point:  a spit thread i started in which people plained the spit didnt climb well enough because they saw 0-20k figures of around 3:30.  Go figure....

I never said I thought you said it was right - I was just pointing out my disbelief of such a high figure, as it is comparible with the figures for the best climbing prop fighters of WW2.
