Title: 76mm Gun next to Q.F. 17
Post by: dirt911 on April 29, 2010, 03:35:16 PM
Im not so sure about the guns on the M4A3 sherman and the VC Firefly. The guns seem to be the same in size,so my question is how will the two perofrm side by side. Are there any indications that the 17lbr will out perform the M4A3's 76.2mm gun?

Yes.  The 17lber had significantly greater armor penetration than the 76mm had and thus can be expected to have much better performance in AH as well.

Yes,I thought so but both of them were same size so i was wondering how the muzzle velocity compares with the 17lbr.

Quick and dirty internet search, I won't vouch for the accuracy of the data:

7.62cm 17pdr

Projectile weight: 7.7 kg (AP)
Sectional Density: 1.886
Muzzle Velocity: 883 m/s
Total Kinetic Energy: 3001 KJ
Kinetic Energy pr. cm^2: 65.8 KJ

7.6cm M1 L/55

Projectile weight: 7.0 kg (APCBC)
Sectional Density: 1.724
Muzzle Velocity: 792 m/s
Total Kinetic Energy: 2195 KJ
Kinetic Energy pr. cm^2: 48.38 KJ

If that data is correct, the British 17lb'er has a %30 edge over the US 76mm M1 L/55 in performance.
