ah you are looking for a film editor, sorry

I am also interested in finding a good free film editor that would allow me to capture my films in higher detail than the 3 I made I was really happy with how well I felt they went with the music but I feel I was entirely let down by the quality of the recording as it reminded me of how youtube stuff looked before they bumped their resolutions up.

I've been looking for a couple years now. And I hate to say there ain't anything good that's for free. If you really want to be happy with the end result, I'm afraid you have to drop some cash for Sony Vegas.

You could try VirtualDub, it's free software (GNU General Public License).
More info could be found from Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VirtualDub (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VirtualDub)
VirtualDub are powerfull video editor software and you can find lot of filters for it, but it is not so easy to use as Sony Vegas or Windows Movie Maker.

Try MediaCope. It's free, you can edit video, sound and also convert either.

The trial for Sony Vegas is fully functioning and allows you to try it for 30 days. That should be long enough for you to get a few projects done or to decide its worth the money (which imo it is).

I use Vegas Movie Studio 9.0. It's a decent price about $40 :salute

I found this recap of alternative freeware/shareware programs to Sony Vegas. Most are free or open source. I can't vouch for any of these other than WMM or Premiere, however. Here's the link:
