According to The Consumerist: http://consumerist.com/2010/04/congratulations-comcast-youre-the-worst-company-in-america.html
Comcast is now the local cable company where I live. The rights to the cable business in town has been bought and sold around 4 times since I've lived here, and now has ended up in the hands of the worst company in America. Great. Anyways, I use Verizon for landline and DSL and DirecTV for television, and avoid being a Comcast customer, and I must say my experiences over the years are far better than my lesser informed neighbors, friends, and co-workers who use Comcast.
Who else is in a Comcast area, and what, if anything, do you do to avoid being their customer?
-
Nothing.
In fact, I invite my neighbors to use my wireless signal when their DSL/FIOS is not working.
Might just be where I live, though

god, i hate Comcast. My internet has been messed up all this week. After first i thought i was my router cause it started making a buzzing sound which isnt normal. So i went to the store and bought a brand new router. and then i realized my internet was still dropping connection every 5 or so min. I called comcast, they kept saying it was my wireless router which would be impossible since its new. when i was finally able to talk to an American on the phone he said he believes it was my modem and that I'd have to bring it to a service center to get a new 1. I havnt had internet all week and today not 20min before i leave my house to go to comcast i got on my computer and all of a sudden my internet works again.
When i got on xbox a abunch of people from around where i live said they had the same problem :furious
-
place i work uses them, every 2 months we have the internet drop connection, then it takes them a week to fix it. i wouldn't use them for anything at home, dish network and AT&T work just fine for me.
-
I have had the exact same problems with Verizon in my area.
5 years with Comcast and not a single day without service (except for when the power was out)

thats funny. it the opposite way around here. Comcast is always down, and Verizon's completely wireless (except for the plugin to the wall) is pulling through strong.

I've had both good and bad experiences with Comcast.
Don't kid yourself about Verizon and DirecTV being any better.
-
One thing you have to understand. Verizon, comcast, alltel, Charter are all just names. The service you get in your area will depend mostly on the people who hold the franchise in that area. Charter is the local Cable here, and I have no issues with them. The people who run charter in this area care about the people they serve. Go up to north GA and Charter up there is the worst company out of 20. Its the people that have to care, the name is just the brand they baught.
I know that the corporate office has some say in how they run things, but its the local managers that have to care or the service will be sucky.

I had DirecTV for 10 years, I never had a single complaint. They are better, the Consumer says so.
-
hahaha me and my roommate have been &itching for months about how bad they are, comcast should burn down in flames

Was with Dish for TV and AT&T for internet until we moved in October last year. Dish couldn't get line of sight on the Sat so we had to go with Comcast-no problems since but paying double for roughly the same package. My internet with AT&T started dropping on a daily basis so switched to comcast and no further problems since we swapped about 3 months ago.

you think comcast is bad? have you even try the alltel data card. i have one and well it is total crap. disconnects ever 10 to 20mins on week days lagg on the weekends and when you call and ask for help you get the run around. and when they say there gonna call you back they never do. if comcast was here i switch to them but there not hell there is even not any DSL yet.

When I moved up to L.A., the only option for me was ComCast and I was unhappy because of the reputation of its quality of service. I was extremely surprised that at least in my case, ComCast provided excellent service with both cable and Internet. Internet and cable TV only went out during power outages and my Internet speeds were fantastic. Sadly, Time Warner bought them out in my area and had to convert to Time Warner and that's when the headaches and crappy service started.
When I moved a few miles away, it took Time Warner over 3 weeks to get service into my house. Their guarantee of showing up on time was just BS and there really wasn't a guarantee according to one of their customer service reps, it was just a marketing thing. During that three week period, they missed every single on of their scheduled appointments. One of the times they did show up, they were 3 hours late and the Time Warner guy said he had to go back to his truck and get some equipment and as I watched out the window, I saw him get in and drive off and leave and never came back. I called up Time Warner afterwards and told them what happened and they brushed me off because in my area, they are the only option for Internet but luckily not for TV so I told them to diddly off and went with DirectTV for TV but had to bite the bullet and stick with Time Warner for Internet. In fact, right now at home I am without Internet because Time Warner is having problems with a back bone in my area which means I have no Internet with no estimated time for getting it back.

I am in Roseville Ca. I had to buy these box's for normal cable. Was like 100 bucks for three. So dumb.

My only option is comsuck for internet. I've tried to get DSL they say it is not in my area but the house right next door has it. I saw a guy working on the pole ask him he said yea I'm changing the box to a 25 hook up instead of a 10 or something like that. That was a year ago and they still say no DSL. Go figure.
Just think Comsuck has a deal on the table to buy NBC boy does NBC need help that CEO ran it right to the ground. Comcast to the rescue when they can't even get internet right. Call them you are lucky if you can understand them an then some bull it's not us it's your end.

Here in Redford, only AT&T U Verse and TW have serive within the city. We have the U Verse bundle.
-
We're stuck with Comcast since the phone equipment is prehistoric (the cable is only ancient) and we aren't allowed to have a dish. It's...very sucky. Expensively sucky.

Unfortunately AT&T isn't an option as they don't provide service in my area. If I moved 3 blocks south into Manhatten Beach then I could get AT&T or Verizon FIOS and dump Time Warner.

Make friends in that neighborhood.
Buy a really looooong Cat-6 cable :D

Comcast cable TV and Internet have been pretty solid in my area the past couple years. Pricey, of course. Started to switch to Verizon FIOS, but once got past the hype and limited time offers, price looks about the same as Comcast. FIOS advantage supposedly is private line, but would have to stick a big battery backup box in the house (don't have a garage).
So I remain in a rather pleasant limbo. Might switch to FIOS some day. Meanwhile, Comcast does fine in TV and Internet.

Comcast is ok at best. Roadrunner was far faster and consistent.

We have the EXACT same problem, It sucks. And my comcast keeps dropping connection, anybody else having this problem at the moment?

I got news for you guys. It isnt Comcast that is the problem where ever you are. It is the Hardware in the Cable that is fed to your house/apt. Doesnt matter what the Cable company is that you buy your service from. If you use a Cable Internet, that is your problem, not whether it is Comcast, QWEST, Southwest Cable, etc... They all use what ever the existing hardware landline that is run to your home is. If that is crap then your internet service is crap. I have Comcast and they are awesome, but they are awesome because I have GOOD hardware run to my home, not 40 year old crap run in by Jethro back in the 60's.
I pay $1.50 a month and they fix everything that goes wrong, no problem. In the 8 years I have lived in my current home I have only lost internet for a total of 4 days over that period. If you got Cable run to your house and you really dont like Comcast, they are not the only game in town. But in all the years since Cable anything was invented I have not seen any significant difference between any service. They all have performed "Technically" the same. Very different business practices, some are stupid jerks and some know how to build a customer base and keep it. But as far the the technical quality goes... no real difference. Yeah I've been around since before TV.

Tell that to the three Comcast hubs that drop 95+% of all packets dropped on my route to HTC, Denver speed tests, New York speed tests, and Japan. :)
they are not the only game in town.
Yes...yes, they are.

We have Comcast available in our neighborhood.....but no way would I ever sign up with them for anything.
When we had cable tv it would sometimes go off for all day Saturday or Sunday. If you called them a receptionist would kindly ask
you if you checked behind your set to make sure it was connected properly......Arggggggggggggg gg ! ....or some
other stupid question. It seemed like she was reading a script of questions to annoy the customers so they would get mad and hang up.
We use Directv for television ( has never stopped working in 8 years)
Astound Cable (brand new fiber optic network) for internet (d/l speeds of 20-22 meg & 3 meg u/l),
and AT&T for phone.
It will be difficult for Comcast to change the reputation they have earned for poor service.
