Ok, so I have played AH2 for awhile... I used to run with The Old Breed until 1) seemed they stopped playing while I was in Af-trash-istan and 2)FA is shutting down and I believe TWC may make AH2 their home (watch out, because in my time I in AH2 I haven't seen the level of teamwork we can bring-- without 30 people rolling somewhere!)
Here is my problem, even with 2, 2.5 years in AH2, and a seasoned Forward Observer and Company FSNCO who's whole life depends on range estimation on the real battlefield, I am close, but not hitting with first rounds like the uber GV'ers. This means I dont have time for the 3rd shot which is usually my hit. 1st shot over or short, 2nd shot adjusted, 3rd shot on target.. How are guys getting me on 1st and 2nd shots- when not spawn camping where distance is known roughly?
The reticle in the tank, as with in my bino's are not in mils. So I can't say, tree is roughly 12-15 mils which with the mil ratio applied, 1 mil at 1000 meters is 1 meter, so if the tree appears to be 15 mils tall the tree is 1000 meters away, so the tank next to it is a 1000m shot, which in AH2 is roughly 800-900yards.....
Also, with the reticle, tanks do not seem to "fit" between distance indicators. What I mean is, a tank type, based off its size, should fit roughly between distance indicators to help assess distance (Forward Observers are keen vehicle I'D specialists as well).
Anyways, how is it done? Any help would be appreciated.....

Im in the same boat as you, I often need 4 or 5 shots to zero my target before I am spotted, I do better when I dont zoom into my gun sights for some strange reason?
-
I believe Hitech once did mention the calibration of the tick marks in the reticle of tanks (it's a certain number of mils) but I can't remember it (you might try a forum search for "mils" with Hitech as poster).
Before he mentioned that, I had already figured this out: if a Panzer broadside view is exactly as long as one of the horizontal tick marks then it is 1200 yds away, if it is 1/2 a tick mark it is 2400 yds out etc. If the Panzer is headon and fills a horizontal tick mark it is 600 yds out; 1/2 a tick it's 1200 etc. Other tanks are about the same length/width so it should get you close. Since trees are variable height I wouldn't think they are a good source of calibration.
Edit: my replying does not imply I think I am an "uber GV'er"- fair to middling at best. Also, this is for a T34 sight; perhaps the others are different

My mystery is when i DO find the range and hit the target, the follow up misses.
If say the target is 1200m down range, and I put the sight at 1200 to hit it.
after the first shot I once again placed the sight on 1200, the next shot misses.
now this is for STATIONARY targets (me n him)

Kenne you might try putting your mouse pointer on the target before you fire. Then lock it there with the H key.
Easier to get back to the exact same spot for that second shot.

It is size memory for me. The tank will be the same size for a given distance. I let my brain decide for me. It takes lots of shooting to get the range down.
-
It's quite literally sheer experience. Recognizing the amount of zoom you're using (it moves rather granularly, so you can get the same amount of "shadow" on the edges of the screen each time) and looking at the size of the tank in your sight to gauge where you need to aim. No measuring, no thought; all based on past experience and "instinct," I suppose you could call it.
Do note that the Firefly's main gun sight is incorrectly scaled.

after 8+ years here i have never noticed this... i just got so used to seeing the size of the GV i score hits... very insightful :aok

I just got back to AH after my vaction. I used to be a dam good shot in a GV. Its all about the size of the tanks. If a tank is this small it must be this far. So thats how I shoot and I usually hit 1st or 2nd time.

Hitech said "The Horizontal lines in the tank sight are 5 mils wide".

'lock it there'?
lock what, the gunsight?
lock so it is not effected by recoil?
or what?
what is the OE function of the 'H' key, mine is mapped for arresting 'H'ook for CV ops.
thanks

Hmmm...what's a mil?

Hmmm...what's a mil?
1 mil = 0.001" (mil is the abbreviation for 1/1000 th)
Which is applicable in the Mil Ratio Formula of 1 mil, at 1000 meters, is 1 meter, at 2000 meters, is 2 meters, so on so forth. We use it to adjust the impact of artillery and mortars in a call for fire in the military. It is also used in giving very accurate directions for the OT line (observer-to-target line) where there are 360 degrees on a compass, there are 6400 mils on a compass, making a call for fire and the following adjustment accurate based off the perspective of the Forward Observer.

If you haven't remapped H, it basically toggles whether the mouse cursor moves. I think it's a holdover from them trying to implement a "mouse look" system that no longer functions...

For some reason Battalion has been sending a lot of 13-series guys to my National Guard infantry unit. You guys certainly know your stuff.
As for Aces High, I can certainly sympathize. By the time I have my target bracketed I'm usually dead meat.

Quoted for truth. I know range more by size of target than position on the reticle. It has taken a lot of shells down range to get there. Once you have acquired this ability, you will have nights that you can just point and shoot at varying distances and nail vehicle after vehicle.
Get a buddy in the TA. Have him move away a roughly set distance and plug away at him. Have him do it with different tank models too as they all have their "size" differences at different ranges. Start stationary. Then work traversing shots where he is moving, then shots while you are both rolling. It will happen for you. Practice, practice, practice. Best of luck!

What he said.
And it helps to use only 1 tank so you can get used to the sight on that tank. For the most part it just lots and lots of practice.
I've only been here 1 1/2 years but i rarley do anything but tank. But even after 1 1/2 years I by no means know everything about GVing.
Goodluck and practice allot :salute
