Never heard this animal before.. Kind of just appeared in our back yard.. It's beyond the privacy fence so we can't see what it is.. But I recorded it with a digital camera..
The download comes in at 54 megs.. It's hi-quality with better than decent audio(you can use Windows Media Player)where you can plainly and clearly hear the creature.. Comes in at a little over 2 minutes,
but the creature can be heard at :11, :37, 1:07, 1:40, 2:06 and 2:16..

What the heck is this thing? Rabbit? Opossum? Frog? Turtle? Chupacabra????

Where do you lived?

Where do you lived?
West of Indianapolis.. Semi-Rural area.. There are train tracks and woods about 20 yards beyond the fence.. There's a little creek that runs behind the fence about 10 yards back..

OK, well i cannot see a dam thing on that video except the lights in the background. I hear it but a fiat sound. So my guess is it would be a large rodent, or muskrat. can you descried it to me.

The camera is the only recording device I had with me at the time, so I am relying on it's audio mainly.. Listen to the time indexes that are stated in the first post(that way you don't really need to listen to the whole thing through).. I'm going to look up a muskrat sound..
Update.. Here's a muskrat.. http://www.hww.ca/media.asp?mcid=5 (http://www.hww.ca/media.asp?mcid=5)<--(scroll down to muskrat) They don't sound the same at all.. However, animals make all kinds of noises.. So, who knows??

I didn't hear anything except crickets.

Ok, it is not a Rabbit, Opossum, could be a frog but they remain silent when you are near by them, turtle do not make any sound except hissing and Chupacabra is overrated.
it also could be a short bird or water fowl
-
I was thinking it sounded like a bird.

Think a heron maybe? I've heard at least several from different directions and they call back to each other.. I know I'm kind of obnoxiously curious.. Please forgive..
I've just never heard this creature back there before, nor do I remember every hearing it in my life..

starting to think that too. I heard that sound before and thinking it is a water fowl or shoreline bird

Next time you hear it, point a shotgun in the direction of the sound and pull the trigger to identify.
Just a suggestion, take it or leave it. :)

I would, but another neighbor down the way shot a canada goose that was crapping all over his yard.. Some neighbors down the street from him called the cops and he got ticket for discharging a firearm in a residential area as well as a ticket from the DNR for poaching since canada geese are protected here.. He had to throw lots of money at both cases to get them reduced..

Hard to tell on the video, but my first impression was Platypus. But the shadows are too big for that, kinda like the size of a hippo. Then I saw the hump on the shadows back, like a camel, but it's too short to be one. Try to get a picture next time. If I had to guess though, I'd say it was one of the elusive Humpalottapus's or some variant.
-
Definitely not a Sandhill Crane.
Sounds sort of like a Whooping, but I doubt since as far as I know they don't go anywhere near Indiana on their migration route.
Definitely sounds like some kind of wetland bird to me, some variety of goose or heron I'd bet. Do you live near a marsh or wetland, or grain fields?
-
My guess would be Mothman or Manbearpig.
Someone had to.

wait you found my mother in law ? you better run and hide.

Yes, close to marshland, wetland and grain fields especially....
The sounds are close enough to where if it was a crane or heron(both rather large birds), I'd be able to see it and hear it walking around.. There's enough light back there where I'd see something of that size..
And to those of you stating you are seeing anything in the video, that's because all I meant to use the recording for was sound.. It was pointing it in the general direction of where the sound was coming from and had no intentions of catching it on video as this digital point and shoot doesn't have nightvision.. I was merely using it for the sound aspect.. Next time, I'll just rip the audio from it so as not to confuse anyone.. I will try to get a more clear recording tonight..

That is not always true. Despite migratory birds stick to the same rout, sometimes they will take off to a different rout that you least likely will see them.

Read that really slowly and see if that doesn't sound funny.
Johnny: Hey! Freddy's gotten lucky three times this week!
Ted: You betcha, that guy's a Humpalottapus!

Kansas is the western meadow lark (Sturnella neglecta).

I'm sorry? Canada Geese are protected in Indy? Who's brilliant idea is that?
At home (toronto) the damn things are nesting on the freaking islands in mall parking lots.
Remember the old adage to be glad cows can't fly? These things drop out turds the size of your fist. Everywhere. Copious quantities.

I think Larry is the state loon... Indiana has a lot of birds. I listened to the video and it sounded like a nesting Dove to me (not a mating call) but at night they are usually quiet. No idea.
