We all know about how spies jump into a shore battery so you can't kill their cv with it. One night we (squadies) were talking about this, and an idea that poped up to maybe stop this was to make mannable guns the same as controlling a CV: A higher ranked player can boot you out of it and take control. Of course this isn't full-proof, if the spy is ranked really high, then only a few, if not no one, will be able to boot him, but it's better than never being able to boot him out.
Also, +1 for name tags over shore batteries idea! :aok

I understand the reasoning, but I disagree with using rank to boot. I don't play for rank, but I am a good gun operator. Would hate to be booted by a score potato. I feel a better idea is to make a named icon visible above the shore battery. That way you can heap mass amounts of BBS abuse on the perpetrators when found out.

+1 on name tags on shore batteries, plus I'd also add a 1 hour "waiting" period after switching countries before being able to man the SB or take control of the CV to keep side switchers from taking over the CV and parking it right in front of their buddy in the SB.

...also, how about the AH host puts a message in the buffer along the lines of this:
SYSTEM: shore gun at base X-NN crewed by user XXXXXXXX

What about also implementing a "afk timer" as well? You are inactive in the SB (or any manned gun for that matter) for 2 1/2 minutes, you auto tower? So if someone pops in with intent to prevent use, they'd have to at least push the mouse or tap a key even min or so? Ran into this a couple of times myself, where there was an enemy CV right in front of the SB, but no one could get into it and it wasn't firing a shot.
A +1 for the 1 hour waiting and for the Name Tag.

The System Message for the SB being crewed, would be a coding nightmare I think.

Just a thought, but what about setting shore guns in postions to cover the towns from gv's.

If you just pointed a Shore Battery towards the GV spawn, it would definitely spice things up. The Ground Battery, would have to be a bit easier to kill AND not guarantee 1 hit kill you.
Now that I think about it, it would be nice if there were heavier guns to defend bases with. It's a pain in the arse to take out a Tiger or a Sherman with the manned ack. I didn't say you can't do it, it's just a real pain. :lol So what about Anti-Tank Bunkers for bases and towns? Take a Small Airfield for instance: there would be 2 auto-bunkers and 2 manned while the 2 or 3 in town would be purely auto?

Exactly when has a spiez!!1! jumped into a shore battery to deny it's use?
This is another perpetuating and unfounded rumor that has been circulating forever.
What those who yell "Spiez!!1!" fail to take into consideration is the limited firing arc of the shore batteries as well as the slow rate of fire. I've seen the "spiez!!1!" whine while sitting in a shore battery waiting for it to bear on the task group. Ether others don't see the splashes as you shoot or they are just impatient.
Go peddle your false rumors elsewhere.
I'm off to switch countries.....

Well of ur in the sb and somebody complains, it won't kill ya to Say u got no vis. I ways answer if somebody asks who is in the sb. But it gets suspicions when it is pointing at the cv and no fire can be seen or heard.

there are several such sb's on various maps already. some that can hit a gv spawn, some that cover towns. I have annoyed many a tank from them :D
for instance, ozkansas, and baltic are two I can recall off the top of my head.

Its always funny when the cv comes in close to a base, nobody can ever get in the shore battery to take command.
Example from last night Titanic map:
CV is well with-in range and turret angle, shore battery is manned with an unknown player who will not shoot. CV proceeds to circle in same spot for over 1/2hr. in front of SB. Amazingly who ever was in the shore battery was not answering. Simple name tag will work wonders.

And you know for sure he wasn't shooting? Perhaps it was a new guy who was simply not adept?
A squaddie once started ranting and raving about not being able to get into the shore battery, that the goofball in there wasn't even shooting, how unfair that was, etc. etc. Went on for about a good five minutes. It was quite comical . . . especially since I was the one in the shore battery, and had gotten about six hits on the CV while he was ranting about how I wasn't even shooting.
Now, it may have been better for us if I had gotten out and let him sink the CV, but how am I supposed to get any better if I don't practice? Besides, it was fun to hear him sputter . . .
I'll add that do not think kicking anyone out of a SB or field gun using rank or any other means is a good idea in the least bit. New people need to learn somehow. Experience is the best way to learn. By kicking someone out, you are merely disincenting them from ever trying again and making an already frustrating process (learning) even more frustrating.
And that's all I've got to say about that. Except for maybe -1 since that's apparently how all you young'uns do this now.

will it really hurt to see the name of whoever is in the sb?

I think that is a great Idea, one of the best I've heard so far.. Salute. :airplane:

Just a ? but do their names even show upon the text buffer? I ask because I too have asked who is in the shore battery and haven't gotten an answer and haven't been able to deduce the occupier from the "range text" box.
Of course, when you do get a response, you don't think to look and see if the name is in the box.

i'm pretty sure they do show up normally, I know just yesterday I was at a base where there are 2 sb's right next to each other, I was in one, another guy was in the other, I could see him on range and we were able to talk on range...
one possible thing, is sometimes the shore bat is pretty far away from the base, perhaps more than 6k (or whatever the magic range is)
whatever the case, im completely in favor of putting an icon on ALL guns to see who's in them... sb's, ships, field ack..

Of course not, but the OP wants to use rank to boot people, which I think hurts a lot.
So still -1 to the actual wish posted.
