Title: Quick and dirty terrain Clipboard map
Post by: jimson on May 10, 2010, 02:08:26 AM
After building my test terrain the only thing that shows on the clipboard map in game is the field icon and number. No water, no land mass, nothing.

I'm sure I followed midi's instructions correctly.

What am I doing wrong?

Sounds like you did not have the grid option checked in the TE when you clikced on "Make Map".

jimson it sounds like you may have forgot to have the grid display checked in the main editor window options prior to
selecting the make map.

No, I've re-done it several times, including trashing it and starting from scratch.
This is what I got (http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll149/jimsom88/ahss9.jpg)
In the editor itself, the map in the lower right corner is black with white field numbers.

I'd show that but don't know how to take a screenshot from the editor.

Jimson, are you taking the Terrain Editor's clipboard map file and placing it in your terrain's "texsrc" folder? I'm not sure if this is still required, however, did you also convert the bitmap file into a 256-color bitmap?

That is correct, sir.

Did you rename the CBM to the name of your terrain...ex. test.bmp...?

Also with the TE open and the CBM in there showing just hit the "Prt Scrn button on the keyboard. then close down the editor and open paint, Photo Shop or what ever your
graphics editor is and create a new file and then paste into the new file.
thats an easy way to get a screen shot.

Someone said it, but again, what is the color depth of your CBM?

It needs to be 256 color, not RGB.

Stupid question...

After checking all that have you re-made your map, saved, and rebuilt your terrain?

I only ask because after you make those changes you will need to rebuild the terrain since the CBM is in the .res file (after building the terrain) and not from your texsrc folder.

Yes sir, I did that as well. Sorry to be such a pain in the neck guys , I appreciate your efforts to help me figure it out.

Would someone be willing to build one from the same exact instructions, see if they can duplicate the issue?

It only takes a few minutes.

mrmidi, I went back and deleted all the files (again) and built it all over and sure enough it worked as it is supposed to.

I know I must have missed something up until this time, but I honestly did it the same (I thought) as all the previous tries so I sure wouldn't be able to pinpoint what I was doing wrong.

Anyway thanks everyone, this was a sticking point I needed to figure out before I could start trying my other experiments.

:aok good deal jimson glad to hear that.

It's buried deep in the original thread but I have put all my tutorials to date on the AHWiki.

This issue continues and it seems I got lucky one time.

Iv'e narrowed it down to the make map function. Once I make the map, it's blank when I open it in paint. Grid lines show but no land mass or anything else.

I'll continue some testing later and see what I can discover.

I may try to re-download the editor.

I hate to say it again since you already said that you have done this but........  remember to have "grid" checked in the Terrain Window Options like mrmidi showed in his pic.

I'm not trying to be insulting in any way by repeating this and only do it because I have missed that step so many times, so I know how easy it is to forget, not to mention it sounds exactly like your problem.

If your sure that you have checked this option then zip the folder and put it here so those that have more knowledge may be able to help figure things out for you.

I understand completely and am not insulted.

As it turns out, there was something screwy going on with the editor.

After uninstalling it completely and downloading it again, it is working properly  :aok

Iv'e tested it a few times and no longer have the problem.

Thanks for everything guys . Now that I have that figured out, I can start practicing more in depth stuff with the editor, so I'm sure I'll have more questions.
