Alrighty, so I have been straying from my beloved K4 and found that I may have to turn my affair with the Ki84 into a marriage. Anyways, I keep reading about combat trim = bad for Ki84. Could someone expand on this please? What exactly is the problem with the Ki84 and combat trim?

When fast the controls tend to stiffen up on the Ki-84 and if you turn OFF combat trim (when fast) it helps.

The combat trim keeps your nose level at a given speed. For a number of factors, it actually dampens the elevator authority noticably on a couple of planes. The P-38 is one, the Ki-84 is another. If you're pulling out of a dive you'll really feel the difference by toggling it off. You can also feel it when pulling hard for turn-fights. It's night and day. You want to manuver with combat trim OFF when in the Ki, for sure! For general flight, mid-envelope stuff, etc, it's okay to leave on. If you're lining up a kill-shot, go ahead and put it on to stabilize yourself. While manuvering, it's a bad thing.

I've been going the the same situation with the K4 and the Frank over the last few weeks.
I never used combat trim though, so I can't really much answer your question. I never used combat trim from the start, so I don't really know what the difference could be. I have a hat switch at my left index finger on my CH throttle, and mapped the trim to that hat. I just trim as needed usually and don't even think about it at all. I do bump it on and off again quickly occasionally to retrim it quickly, and find that works ok.
Don't necessarily get married though, you never know when you might need to stray...

I guess I have strayed the last few tours. I flew the 84 when it was first released because i was inspired by wilbuz. I really liked it and then something happened, i felt it didn't fly the same-never touched it again until last tour and I love it all over again. Guess Im not good enough of a pilot because I just can't feel much difference -- i just leave CT on except for the high speed times like Lute mentioned.
