Title: Cannot boot up"Fat file missing" ..help
Post by: Ripsnort on August 05, 2001, 06:04:00 PM
Didn't do nothing unusual, just logged on and "Fat file missing"  Goes to C prompt.  Anyone have a clue?  HD fried?

Attempting to boot "safe mode" I get "Windows detected a protection error in VKD file" it auto shuts off after that.

That's not good at all Ripsnort.  :(  Chances are your FAT (file allocation table) have been corrupted and all data on your drive as well.  You very well may have a bad drive on your hands also.

in c prompt try :

scanreg /restore (and choose earliest date)

or

scanreg /fix

Then do a

fdisk /mbr

and restart.

If that doesnt fix it... you got a problem   :p
