Title: Basic Training
Post by: danny76 on May 12, 2010, 07:38:35 AM
Would it not be possible to employ some kind of walk through - talk through style training section for newbs?

Maybe they could follow a drone through immelmans, barrell rolls, etc etc, or fly the maouvres through virtual tunnels or rings.

Possibly even give them an aiming point to keep and eye on through the manouvre, simulating an enemy after initial merge?

You could have hud gauges showing levels of input required of rudder /ailerons / elevators for the student to try and match through the manouvre

Just a thought, doubt i'm the first but i did look

Contact one of the trainers and set up some personal training... you will get a lot more out of that than you will a pre-programmed tutorial.

Thanks, I have and did some time ago, and a recent refresher, I've been playing about 18 months now, just suggesting maybe for total newbies it might help them avoid the mullering they'll get in the MA :salute

The best thing you can do, and I speak from experience, is winging up with a player who is experienced and is willing to spend time with you.

No better way of learning...

There are these from the main page/Downloads/films. There was also an area at the bottom of the trainers section but this has an error.

Unfortunately many just want to jump in a plane and go thinking this will be like any other point and shoot game...

I had made up a few "Flash Tutorials" while I was out of work. They use to be posted under the "miscellaneous" section of the trainers site.THIS is one of them. (http://webpages.charter.net/maddogjoe/cobra/dot_commands.swf)

People here have only tried to help with your original post, danny76, no need to SLAM anyone

most every posted reply has offered some sort of help or pointed to help that might be found thru several different links......

please keep it civil, thank you

AH player "boosen" (<--spelling? ) also has videos similar to Fugitives Flash vids of walking new players thru from 1st setup and first flight......

Fugitive - are the files not showing up? the Aces High Server "Hard Drive" used for the "CM / Trainer stuff" did get replaced, we thought we had everything back like it was originally....

if anyone spots an invalid link please bring it to our attention, it would be much appreciated.....

hope this helps........ ~S~

I've watched most of Bbosen's videos and they are excellent primers for anyone new. Although some of the setup and usage may be different than I would show a player, the views system that Bbosen uses may or may not work for everyone.

That said, these vids will get most new players up and running and have a fair grasp of complete game play!

Thanks Morfiend.

To clarify the view system that I use and teach:

I use the numeric keypad view system exactly as it comes standard with every new, unmodified installation of Aces High. I make just one change to that: I remap the "look down" key to numeric keypad "slash".

If you start out with a very basic joystick (or, heaven forbid, without a joystick at all), you will find that view system is the best for your basic use.

However, most users have a joystick with a "Hat Switch", and I make a big change there. Instead of just leaving the hat switch to duplicate much of the standard view system that's already mapped to the numeric keypad, I like to program additional functions to it.

Most people approach this the other way around: they either ignore the numeric keypad view system, or they remap their numeric keypad with other functions. They must also make a custom mapping somewhere for "look up" and "look down".

You will find strong opinions on the pros and cons of both approaches. Either system can be made to work very well. Aces High has the best, most flexible view system of all flight simulators IMHO.

With a little experience and familiarity with the keyboard and joystick mapping options, you'll quickly form your own opinions and eventually you'll find the optimal setup for your particular hardware.

The point is that Aces High gives you the choice. The video clips teach the principles, and are oriented toward absolute beginners experiencing their first encounter with a combat flight simulator, using Aces High as the specific example.  I hope a lot of new people find it as fun as I do.

Regards,
