Post by: ebfd11 on May 17, 2010, 01:43:09 AM
Guys I am looking to go with seperate sound card, I would like to hear what you are using. I also would like to hear the pros and cons of your cards.

FYI I have the MSI P45 platinum MB. Also are there any good cards that are 7.1 surround?

Your help would be apprciated. Thanks in advance.

As loud as your avatar is, I don't wonder that you need advice pertaining to a sound card! (You might want to tone down the flashy flashy flashy thing a bit... )

I went with an Asus Xonar D1 after a bunch of due dilligence.

I'm very happy with it the sound quality and features, as well as the software controls you get over it.

you dont need a high end sound card a 50-60 dollar soundblaster would be more then enough for this game.

OK now I have a second question... so bear with me plz..

I have the Logitech G35 Headset with a USB input, I have looked and am unable to find a soundcard that is compatible with that type of connection. Is there an adapter that I can buy?

USB headphones use their own drivers.. no sound card is required for them (nor would it help any if it could).  Let me ask this.. what exactly are you trying to do?

Check it again, it's 20 bucks.

PS.  Sound cards don't work well in an AGP slot.   :headscratch:

I prefer using headsets with separate plugs for voice and sound. I always find the sound to be a little clearer, plus you don't have the problem figuring out which USB port will utilize it best.

In reality, there are four kinds of sound cards. On a scale from sucks to far too much; integrated ones, far-off-brand ones, standard ones (generally SoundBlaster), and studio ones. The reason for getting a separate sound card is their onboard RAM and dedicated processor, so anything beyond that is just how much fancy you want on it. Though discontinued, my SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS (I believe it was later rebadged into the X-Fi line) has served me well. I'll keep using it until OSes outrun the drivers or PCI is phased out, whichever comes first.

USB headsets generally have their own "sound card" in them which either bypasses or neuters your computer's sound card. They're generally a bad idea in terms of gaming.

Do all sound cards reduce the CPU load?  If not, what in the specs would indicate that it does?

There really isn't a specific specification to look for, since I don't think you can get one without their own processor and memory.

Avatar removed...seizures gone...bit my tongue. :furious

I recently bought one of these after several posts recommending it.

It works great with the new Sennheisser headset I have.

Actually most sound cards out today offload to your system's cpu with the exception of Sound Blasters and the Xonar.  There could be a few others that run dedicated sound processors that don't rob from your system but they are few and far between with the exception of the aforementioned cards.  I believe the worst ones are the onboard chips and the USB headphone/soundchip combo types.

All the Best...

I've just ordered that set of Sennheisser headphones to go w/ my Xonar as these Logitech Live Chat USB units are causing issues when I fly now due to my new EVGA GTX 470 SC vid card is loading up my C2D E8600 CPU to the hilt--even OC'd to 4.0Ghz.

Flying on the Xonar--no issues. On the USB headphones AH will lock up due to sound getting out of synch when the graphics scenes get heavy. Can't have that!

Thanks for posting that link Uvsi!
