I'm not quite 36 years old, and I just can't seem to find too many people in my age group that still shave with a cutthroat. :cry
I've destroyed 2 electric razors.
Disposable/changeable blades last 2 shaves, tops.
There is only one way I've found that gives a clean, close shave every time without wasting a lot of money.

So... Show of hands....
How many of you guys use an electric razor ?
How many slather brand X shaving cream out of a can on their face and attack it with a disposable style?
How many make a ritual of a hot towel, foaming up your own lather then strop and drag a naked blade of cold, hard, razor sharp steel across your throat?
-
Used to use my K-Bar for shaving but...a Norelco with titanium blades works now. Can't use disposables.
-
No razor at all here. Haven't shaved since 1997.
Just trim the beard up a bit every now and then with clippers.
-
So you like your men clean shaven Von?
-
Dude! Be careful, that thing will slice your back up with a quickness :D

Keep that thing out of sight from mad better half. Being from our A.O. you should be the first to see that VonMessa :D

Does good work for me.
-
I recently upgraded from the mach3 to the fusion as well. Love it.
-
Fusion as well, I've always wanted to use a straight razor but don't go through blades fast enough to justify the initial cost of a good straight edge and accessories.
-
Fusion for me most times too, because I really don't have the time to do it with the old straight razor. On occasion when I do have the time, I break out the strap/razor/lather/hot towel and give myself a good close shave with it.
Just really don't have that much time on a normal basis.
-
I have a beard but shave my head with clippers.
-
Mach 3. Son uses Fusion.
-
When Im in garrison I use my Fusion.
When Im in the field I get my manliness level up there a bit.
I use barbasol shaving cream, a disposable razor, and fill my canteen cup up with water from the water buffalo. After Im done shaving I dump the canteen cup out and make my moring coffee if I was lucky enough to get a coffe pack the day before in my MRE. :aok
:salute

She doesn't even like picking it up to move it.

I'm a wuss, :( I use an electric razor. However, if it gets me any points I only shave every 3-4 days. :D
My barber does straight razor shaves though and I gotta admit, they do a great job.
-
Gave up on the whole razor thing. Just throw the clippers on close and knock it back to stubble when I can't stand looking at the gray anymore.
My women like it rough so stubble is just A OK with them :aok
Now Von, based on those recipes you gave me, I hope your operating that thing prior to taste testing. :pray

Ah, so the practice swipes do indeed happen on the sheep

Norelco Electric Razors.
They last about 8 years, on average.
Get the ones that charge and can run while charging.
They're a good as blades, if you tighten your face and go against the grain.
The replacement blade prices are a racket for the non-electrics.

I've been looking for a good straight razor and strop around town here for years with no success at all. Where did you come up with those? As fast as my beard grows I go broke on razors if I shave every day. I usually knock it back with clippers and then shave once a week. I have a good Braun electric but I don't really ever use it, it seems to cause as many problems as it solves.

you wanna talk about manlyness ok... i gotta walk 15 miles up hill, in the snow! just to get to the nearest shaving area. it is at this place that i begin sharpening 1 rock against another till its razor sharp, i know when it is because i kill a grizzly bear with the sharpened stone and my bare hands before i even use it...just for fun, after im finished shaving i walk back home another 18 miles up hill in a damm blizzard! i do this routine about 6 times a day, yes my beard is that beastly.

Just remember Greens, imitation / flattery and such.
Anyway, I would use a straight blade but I don't at all trust myself early in the morning. Takes me a good long time to wake up, and mixed with my shaky hands it would be a mess. I get enough crap on my shirts (the collars, especially) as is. :lol

Ridiculous, this story is obvious fake... Who ever heard of blizzards in Texas.
:noid

I just use normal razor.

I cant use electric razor cause it pulls me whiskers out. I dont trust myself with a straight razor. For years now Ive used the green razor..cant remember the name, but it vibrates and really seems to help cut down the trees. That and soaking them with a hot towel before I start.

Antique shop :aok
Blade is a hollow grind made by Geneva Cutlery.
The name is worn off the strop, and it was kinda beat up (a few nicks in it, etc) but a good oiling and once-over with a pumice stone brought it to serviceable condition. Try E-Bay.
A good hone or white Arkansas stone is goof to have, also.
A styptic pencil is a must also, as you WILL cut yourself at some point while practicing.
As far as time goes, I've cut it down to about 20 mins, but it's not something you want to rush :devil
Proper prep is the key.

Indeed.
Must really take some magic to sharpen that non-carbon steel blade properly.....

;) :lol
In all seriousness, I use a best badger brush with Aramis shaving soap. Razor is a german made straight razor.
Well worth the time and money :aok
-
For soap I grate a bar of Ivory and a bar of un-scented Dove (or something with a moisturizer in it) and add a tablespoon or two each of olive oil, castor oil & coconut oil (coconut oil makes it lather very nicely). Add enough water to make the soap stick together when stirred then melt it down on the stove and stir until mixed very well and all water is evaporated (soapmakers call this re-batching). Towards the end I add a few drops each of Lavender Oil (healing properties), Clove Oil (takes the sting away from shaving just like it does for a toothache) and Orange Oil (cause I like the smell :) ). The closer to the end you add the essential oils, the stronger the smell. While still in liquid form I pour it into a pringles can (or something similar) and let it solidify and cool off til the next day. cut open the pringles can the next day and slice into 3/4" thick discs. Viola! Shaving soap.
