Neysa. She's no longer with us. :frown:

Nice picture, greens.
Although, I admit not what I expected.
The year before Susan Butcher died I made it up there for a summer visit - she was always part of the riverboat tour - we stopped at her training camp/home and she gave us a little demonstration. What a hero of mine she has always been - it was a real treasure to see her.

I lost my first Rott Bubba in '02 at 4 1/2 years due to a heart defect. Max was 5 when I lost him to kidney failure in Oct. By far the best dogs I have ever known and it's been effing brutal losing them that young. I love Rotts but I am afraid to get another at this point. That crap isn't fair.

Rotts usually live to be at least 10 years old. Freak accidents, man. I guarantee you those Rotts were from Puppy Mills and that is never a good thing. I try to get my dogs from reputable breeders, not mills. Reason being, it is usually a several year difference at least. Im sorry to hear about your Rotts :salute
-
Well not puppy mills but Max was from a backyard breeder, but pretty much the same thing. I knew better but he gave me 5 awsome years. I assure you I will go with a reputable breeder next time and I'll be prepared to drop some serious cash. Hell, I would have paid for a kidney transplant for Max. Thanks Wldcat :salute

No problem, I know how it is. You get attached to dogs, just like anything else.

My first one that I got when I moved out on my own lived to be 12, he was great. Chesty, who was the best dog I've ever owned or even seen, somehow got out of the back yard during the day and was hit by a car and killed. He never should have been out, he'd never gotten out before and I don't know what happened exactly. I suspect that some neighborhood kid tried to get in there and then was scared off and left the gate open. Only a guess though. An even bigger question to me is how do you manage to hit a 135 pound dog in broad daylight. He was a super super smart dog, and never would dart in front of a car. I had had him withe me out and around traffic plenty of times, he wasn't a bolter. I just never understood any of it, but it still hurts to think about. I loved that dog more than anything.
I have a deposit now on a new Rott pup from what I hear through very reliable sources is the best Rottweiler breeder in North America. Now I'm just waiting for my dog to be born, so it's only a matter of time. I have a name picked out and everything already, just waiting. Old World Kennels is the breeder, if you want to check them out. The breed champion schutzhund dogs.

We haven't had anything but Rotties for a long time now. I lost Gretchen to hemangiosarcoma 3/1/09, she was 11. A better dog I could not ask for. My daughter's rescue, "Little Bit" died from toxic shock the Monday before Thanksgiving in 09. She was around 9, we are not sure, since we rescued her from an abusive situation. The Friday after Thanksgiving, I snuck off and rescued Bear, he was 15 months old, and was surrendered due to financial reasons. He doesn't have as strong a temperament as I'd like, but he's a pretty good boy.
It's sort of a hard site to deal with a lot, but try www.rottweiler.net, they have a really good forum.
The sad thing is, the Rottweiler has become the new Labrador Retriever. Way too many people own the dogs who have no business at all with them. They just are not a dog for every person or every family. And the worse part is they've become a breed popular with back yard breeders (BYB) and puppy mills. Too many dogs with health problems and weak temperament are being bred, and it is ruining the breed. To rescue is one thing, but do not buy a Rottweiler from anyone other than a reputable code of ethics (COE) breeder. If the breeder doesn't have health certifications for heart, elbows, eyes, and hips, they are not a COE breeder. If they do not require an application, an interview, and a contract before selling you a pup, they are not a COE breeder. If they do not combine their own choice of a pup for you and the pup picking you, they are not a COE breeder. If they do not have a waiting list, they are not a COE breeder. You do not have to pay $2K for a pup, you can get a companion pup for under $1K. But if the pup is less than $750 or so, and you don't have a personal relationship with the breeder, beware.

Canine Cancer....... Im sorry Hilts... I had a Boxer once that developed throat cancer... lost her when I was 6, best friend I ever had. Tore me up for weeks... Cancer isn't fun, whether it be in Dogs, people.... God forbid even cats. My family has been rocked by cancer, never a fun word to even say. :salute

Well, the saddest thing is the fact that had we caught it earlier, and done a couple of things different, Gretchen would have done much better. We found it when she suddenly collapsed in early 09. It seems that the associate at the vet's office thought there might have been a problem in mid 08. But he didn't really tell us anything. When she collapsed, then he told us. By then, Gretchen was very sick. We opted for surgery because Gretchen was so strong, and so full of life, she acted like a 2 year old even with the tumor when she was recovering from a bleed.. My regular vet thought she'd never survive the surgery. But she was up and around in 30 minutes, despite having her spleen removed, along with a tumor that filled a 2 gallon bucket. Gretchen only weighed 85 pounds. She had lost enough blood to need two transfusions, that caused problems with clots. She survived those, too. I think she picked up a nasty virus on her last visit to the vet to pay off the bill and show how well she was doing. She died the next day.
Had we found the tumor in mid 08, she would never have been so weakened, she wouldn't have lost much blood, and the cancer would not have seeded. I don't think the virus would have gotten her, she wouldn't have been weakened by the clot, and she probably wouldn't have had to deal with the cancer coming back had she lived a while. Had she had a the spleenectomy in mid 08, she'd probably still be with us. She was otherwise extremely healthy, with no real joint problems, no heart, digestive, or respiratory problems, nor any other problems they could find. My regular vet was heartbroken when she died, he felt she'd made it over the hurdles, and would live at least 6 months, longer depending on if the seeded cancer grew or not. The people in his office dearly loved that dog, she was "the best dog I ever worked with", no matter who you asked.
It's amazing how much Bear acts like Gretchen, except for his temperament being somewhat weaker. I think his previous family was pretty rough on him, and being a pup from a BYB, I'm certain he is not of excellent stock, although he is a good solid dog. I'm sure he went "home" too soon, and that makes for temperament issues. He's getting better, but I'm not sure he'll ever be a really strong tempered dog.

Same with our Boxer. She was a good girl. You never really know. Im sorry to hear that, Hilts.

Me too bro. I sure wish that I could clone my two and do it all over again after they're gone. Best pups i've ever had. I just hope it's natural and I don't have to make that fateful choice.
Aw heck, I'm gonna take them for a car ride. The time we get with our furry friends is much too short to not hang our heads out the window with them and just enjoy life as they do.
