Title: A-10 Warthog
Post by: Killer91 on May 27, 2010, 10:49:10 PM
For those of you that have never seen its gun in action check these vids out. Talk about fire power  :x

This is a short one of a strafing run on some buibling in what looks like a mountain.

This one is another strafing run but out in a field this time.

This one is a close up of the gun in action with the aircraft on the ground.

Just an interesting fact about the aircraft.  It was actually built AROUND the gun, the opposite of other aircraft, because the gun is so large.

We have a bombing range and Kansas and had the opportunity to watch these guys come in and scraf vehicles.  Bullets hit the object long before you hear the gun firing.  I hate to be on the target, no way for surviving anything with a 2 sec burs.

Are you talking about the Smoky Hill Bomb Range just south of Salina?  I used to do service work at a rural water treatment plant out there, saw a B2 making runs one day...  Awesome.

The good news is some A10 pilots are as bad at gunnery as they are at spotting which side they're shooting at!

If you are a fan of the A10 as I am, you might be interested in looking at Lock On Modern Combat: Flaming Cliffs 2.0...

This flight sim from Eagle Dynamics is faithful in its reproduction of the A10-A and models the complex systems and controls of the aircraft along with its flight dynamics.

Eagle Dynamics has launched a new module based development program called DCS (Digital Combat Simulator). Modules in the DCS series leverage the Flaming Cliffs environment and mechanics. The first release in the DCS series was the Russian Black Shark Ka-50 attack helicopter.

Purchasing a module gives access to the advanced aspects of each new module, however the existing aircraft resident in the Flaming Cliffs engine are all available as well.

Eagle Dynamics next module release will be the A10-C (to be released late 2010). The C variant of the A10 is a vastly improved platform and takes the limited daytime capability of the A10-A and turns it into an all weather attack aircraft utilizing the most modern weapons and systems including improved optical, infrared and gps based weapons such as JDAM's

Yep...

The A10 was scheduled for decommissioning prior to Desert Storm...and once pressed into service in that conflict, that order was rescinded. Presently the A10 is moving through its 3rd major revision and upgrade contracts are in the works for further variants.

The USAF presently plans on keeping the A10 in service for quite some time and Boeing was awarded a contract last year to modernize the platform further to the A10 II...its safe to say this outstanding aircraft will be in service for at least another decade...if not more...

Must have been something to see...

 :aok

Technically they might have been turning but they surely were not burning...

The A10 employs a GE high bypass turbo fan, and is incapable of after-burner...however it has a very low IR heat signature due to the massive amount of non-combustion air that it processes. An excellent choice of power plant given the down and dirty aspects of mission requirements and the threat of shoulder mounted low tech IR seeking SAM missles...HBPTF engines are also excellent in terms of acoustic signature....(the A10 is very quiet)...

The A10 will go down in history as a cornerstone aircraft...like the P51, the B17, and others....

Our great-grandchildren will be flying computer A10 simulations the way we fly World War II aircraft tonight...

Though it has not achieved legendary status yet...its only a matter of time....

With the roll out of the Land Warrior infantry Combat Situational Awareness system now in active use, the extension and leverage of the A10 as a point and shoot CAS stand off system is just beginning to come into its own...just wait until you see what they do with LW and A10 integration.....

Had the pleasure of witnessing a live fire demonstration by several A-10's when they were first introduced in the mid seventies.
We were told it was built exclusively to provide close air support for us ground pounders and gravel churners in the event the
Soviet Union decided to step across the line.
Very comforting to know it was on our side.
In Red Storm Rising one of Clancy's Soviet officers refers to the A-10 as the Devil's Cross.
Pretty apt description if you ask me.

Friendly fire incidents in a warzone happen.  It is deplorable that it happens, but it happens.  Go through the history of blue on blue incidents and you will find some interesting things about most armies.  For instance the British army engaging Danish forces for around 2 hours during which they fired off 6-8 Javelin missiles.  The point is during battle it happens to everyone except the Swiss. :D
