To save time I just C&Ped what I posted over in the tech support (in bold)
Going by the assumption its something on my machine Im not thinking to look for I figured Id post here.
After last weeks patch then revert back I had a BSOD with a message saying that the machine was shutting down to protect because of recent hardware/software changes.
Then windows wouldnt boot at all. It would just go through this endless cycle, get to the boot in safe mode option (but wouldnt let me do anything from there) then start the boot up cycle all over again.
Now its quite possible I suppose that its something with my machine. But the only changes that were made were to AH So Im throwing this out there just in case
I ended up having to reinstall windows (which turned into an adventure cause I couldnt find what I did with the product key for almost 3 days)
Reinstall everything then when trying to play AH everything was fine but the sound. which made everything in game (only) sound like I was in a star wars movie instead of a WWII game.. After going through several sets of drivers for my onboard sound. I installed an old soundblaster card I had laying around. After messing with that and finally finding and getting rid of sme old files from my onboard sound. Everythng was golden again in game. Unfortunatey, this only lasted a few days because Then came the new update of yesterday switching back to "miles" and my Vox was porked.
Now we stitch back and my sound is porked again where everything is fine for a moment then it sounds like alot of feedback instead of engine sounds. and the game locked up once.
Gonna try reinstalling the drivers for the sound card again.
Then if I still have a problem in game. Im going to try a few other games and see if I have the same problem there.
Right now outside of the game. All sounds are fine everywhere else. the only thing I havent tried is other games.
Diagnostics on the card turn out ok
Ok to add to that.I when I reinstalled windows, I did so to a diff partition so I wouldnt loose some files that were important.
Sound problems after I switched over to the Soundblaster "live" card were due to some remaining files for my onboard sound.
Once I got rid of those. everything was fine.
When they patched back to the "miles" system. the sound was fine but the vox was screwed up.
Then when they switched back again. the Vox was fine but now the sound is screwed up again.
Inside of the machine is clean.
DXDiag shows everythign ok ( Ithink)
BTW Soundcard is a SB Live! older one. Driver disk was dated 2001 aint much in the way of newer drives for this card. but once I got the old onboard sound files/drvers taken care of and until the last switch to "miles" and back again. It worked
Suggestions?

Dred, I'm not sure what the issue is. I can offer a suggestion on the product keys. Use Belarc Advisor. http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
I use this on all my computers. It inventories all products on the computer. I then print it out and file it for safe keeping.
Addendum: looks like your hardware accelerator is on full. You may want to put that to 3/4.

I eventually found the product key in the very least likely place I would have put it.
As much of a mess as I have. The things Im anal about I'm pretty anal about.
Stuff with the computer is usually one of em. Everything for each machine I usually keep with its motherboard box. Or in a seperate case that contains system software (driver disks, etc)
This was under a pile where I keep assorted papers. Basically a semi junk paper stack. I didnt bother to look there because I knew I would never put it there.
But, thats where it was.
Now the sticker is on the inside of the case. they key is written in the XP manual, on the disk jacket. It aint getting lost this time LOL
I'll try the hardware thing

Thinking of picking up a new soundcard today just for giggles.
JUSST in case there is somethign wrong with this old card too.
I figure at worst. I have a new sound card

Why not just remove the card and unload the drivers before rushing out and getting a "New Card" ?
Remove the variable from the equation and test it before plugging in a new variable...

Yep, it's better to troubleshoot first. It means you strip your computer to BARE essentials and try to boot. By stripping I mean remove every component from your motherboard, reapply heat compound to cpu, reseat ram, replug every cable etc.
One hdd, cpu, ram, onboard video if you have one - will it boot? If yes, try adding more hardware untill it crashes, one by one.
If you can post and boot to a linux live-cd, run memtest x86 to test your ram. The test must run through flawlessly if you have even one error your ram or motherboard is either bad or incompatible. Check that your ram is approved for the mobo/cpu combo.
If no boot, try swapping harddrive, install OS there and try if it boots. If yes, you probably have a bad hdd in your hands.
If still no boot then start looking for cpu, motherboard or power supply problems. Try to swap each component if you can - if you can't then you at least know where to start not to spend money on parts you don't need.
If your cpu is bad, your computer most likely just refuses to post totally. Just a reminder.

Too late. I already picked up a new sound card. LOL
computer boots fine. I intially wanted to do a windows repair on my C drive but it told me I had a bad sector. So I simply reinstalled in a different partition. Computer actually runs pretty good now, cept for Aces high..And there its only the Sound or Vox taking turns.
Figgered out part of the problem was part of my onboard sound which is designated as being PCI. AFTER I tried the new sound card and had it not work at all.
Was driving me nuts because it started telling me it found new PCI hardware And it showed me two PCI system devices with exclamation points. But none of the drivers for anything I tried worked.
Ended up doing as was suggested and taking out the sound card. then the Ethernet card. I left int eh PCIE video card.
It was still giving me that message. But only showed one PCI with an exclamation point. Then I had the bright idea to "roll back the driver" which told me it was "Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio" Got that installed and the the sound card back in and viola. Sound card works fine (Soundblaster PCIE Xfi Xtreme Audio)
Ok now sound works fine in game. Vox,,in windows it works great. Damn near blew me eardrums out. But..it keeps wanted to calibrate to the FP (Im assuming means front panel) I can get it going on the sound card. And as I said works great...in windows.
In AH I get something of a delay where I have ot wait a second or two after I press and hold the transmit button on myt stick before I speak. If I dont. A sentance like "John has a long moustache" will end up sounding like "hn has a long moustach"
Or "has a long moustache" witht he first part or word omitted.
I have a feeling this is a setup problem.
Any suggestions?

What is it that is set as your 'default recording device' in the Sound app of control panel?

I think you are correct. Experiment with different sound environments. For instance my sound is best if I use the "underwater" Environment.

Sound is now fine.
Its the vox thats messed up

That would be why I asked about your default recording device.

My last post was aimed more at vox. Try the underwater environment.

I believe the SB is the problem because this is one of the lower end X-Fi cards and most if not all of the audio processing is done on the cpu. When you press the button to talk the load on the cpu increases by quite a bit and so you see a delay. I would be surprised if you dont also see hesitations in frame rate when that happens. Probably if you havent yet the first time you get near a large crowd of people and press the button to talk your system will freeze for a second or maybe longer. There are X-Fi cards that dont load the cpu down so much.
I didnt know how good sound could be on a computer until I dumped SB.
-
There is some weird problem with the way AH handles audio together with XP. On windows7 the 'on sound' stuttering was magically gone on the same hardware that had mucho problems running XP and AH. Curiously enough the problem touched only AH and no other games.
-
Well, Disabled the SB sound card and managed to get decent drivers for the onboard sound.(realtech) Everything, including vox is near normal. Note, I said "near"
interior sounds are fine, and most of the time exterior sounds are fine. The Only remaining problem is on highspeeed passes or in turnfights when other other planes in close proximity. the sound sometimes changes from a normal airplane sound to what can best be described as a sine wave, then back to a normal sound again.
Till I get this completely figured out its, at least tolerable, but annoying.
Also, I've tried to duplicate these problems elsewhere But the only place its happening is in AH.
Problem is. Every time I think I have the problem near solved HTC switches backy forthy with the miles system and I end up back at square 1 LOL
-
When I logged in with the Miles system active the only things I noticed that were different is:
1) doppler shifts as planes passed sounded different
2) voices were slightly pitch shifted to where I could hear them better
3) voices were more true to life
The way the current system is (the older sound method) it seems as if the vox method is limited in response range or sampling (Im not an audio expert so the terminology escapes me) and so voices are not true representations and people that I know and have spoken to on the phone are higher in pitch online. With the Miles system voices were mucher closer to true tones.
I didnt have to make any changes to work with either system.
-
During the first switch to Miles I had no problems. It was only after it was switched back the problems started.
Now Im not blaming the switch or HTC for whatever problems I am incurring. I dont know whats causing them.
thats what Im trying to figure out.
All I do know is I've developed a problem. and I think I have it near fixed. Then a switch is made to miles again and I developed a problem Then upon the switch back the problem alternates between Vox and game sounds. More specifically, the external sounds. And whenever I seem to be closing in on solving one problem, the other flares up.
Whatever the problem is on my end the switches back and forth seem to bring them to noticability. (yea I know its not a word. but it works)
At some point I may just say the hell with it and completely reformat and start over from scratch, clean slate as it were. And see if there is a marked improvement.
In the meantime Im treating it like a puzzle and learning experience. so if I ever see something similar again I can say "AHA!"
-
Its a word you just dropped an 'e.' :D
-
Don't know if this was ever brought up - or even relates to the discussion. I have always been advised to set sound acceleration in Direct X to 3/4
Have you tried this?

Yep.
update.
I'm back to using the on board sound again.
Vox is good, interior sounds are good..or I should say any sounds I hear comming from MY plane is good.
Exterior sounds are also good......UNTILL there is a high speed pass or Im in a knife fight. then the outside planes sound fine untill we pass by each other.
then it does a sine wave type sound that sounds more like the electronic effects opening to Rush 2112 Overture' then an airplane as soon as a little bit of distance is put between my plane and the other plane/s the sounds go back to normal.. The sounds on my plane remain normal throughout. its only the outside planes that are effected and then only when we pass by one another at our closest points..
Also explosions delayed and are distorted. But actualy the distorted explosions sounds kinda cool. Kinda like the extended sound of a nuclear blast. Or rolling thunder
"BOOooooOOOOoooom"

The problem is like I said that this particular card does all of its processing on the CPU. Anyone can make a card that does the same thing but it seems like Creative just loves to pass off junk to consumers. Its an insult what they get away with but they have consumer loyalty like crazy.
I think sound devices are ranked thus (from worst to best):
cheapo PCI that passes all processing to CPU ($10-70)
onboard sound (by a very narrow margin)
USB headphone types
anything PCI by creative above the $100 mark
USB Audio Interface
any other PCI manufacturer $70 and up
Firewire Audio Interfaces $50-200 (from this point on audio is hit or miss with games)
M-Audio Cards (from this point on audio is mostly miss with games)
Firewire Audio Interfaces $200-Up
Firewire audio is certainly the lowest latency of any audio type. The problem is that environmental enhancements like 3D Surround EAX etc are just not available with FAI devices except in some of the lower end types. The higher quality devices just dont consider gaming a priority and so drivers are written that ignore gaming. They still work but without any frills.
Latencies are easily understood when you check on the throughput rates of USB versus PCI versus Firewire and then consider that FAI devices work with digital from the device to the system (no sampling conversions at the PC side of it).

That card is no longer in my system.
Im running the realtek onboard sound that came on the motherboard (Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3L)
Tried the Live card again And still had problems.
Here's the kicker and to me seems a bit bizarre.
If I remove the drivers for either SB card my onboard sound actually gets worse.
But if I leave the drivers for either card installed but disabled. My onboard (Realtec) sound gets better To where its at now.
Still one of the most frustrating things is that I can run any of the sound devices and they all run fine on everything BUT Aces High.
I've even tried re-installing and even redownloading and reinstalling the game several times.
-
Realtec just released updated drivers today.
ack-ack
-
Just saw that myself.
I have it DLed but not installed yet. I feel like playing AH tonight (FSO) and would rather not spend the night messing with my drivers should something go wrong again
So I'll deal with the weird UFO sounds tonight and try the newer drivers tomorrow. LOL
-
That card is no longer in my system....
Yes my point was that onboard sound is not much better than that specific card. If you have not already cleaned the audio drivers completely (all audio drivers) with something like DriverCleaner... then you should before you install any other sound device.
There are cards out there that are based upon the X-Fi that are better than the SB brand (like Auzentech) but I avoid them. Obviously its your choice what you use.
-
Actually, While I know that it isnt the highest quality option, with the on board sound the game ran fine until these current problems. Its the only reason I was using it.
On the upside. I managed to figure out why any of the other two cards wouldnt work correctly. And I've managed to get the old "SB Live" card working. Vox now sounds great and sounds all now work as they should in game. (though I almost miss the weird rolling thunder like explosions effect I was getting LOL)
Anyway. The answer was one that makes me feel quite the idiot that I hadnt thought of it almost immediately.
While when trying install either of the sound cards I had uninstalled the on board sound drivers, and I had disabled the on board sound in Device manager.
I hadnt thought to disable the on board sound in my BIOS.
DUHHHHH
Last night while flying, a buddy of mine was complaining that my vox suddenly sounded terrible. So, I I logged out of the game figuring I'd recalibrate my Mic.
Then I thought, because I realy dont like the way Realtek has the calibration set up. I'd give the SB Live card one more shot. So I disabled the on board sound again in Device manager and uninstalled the drivers again using Easyclean (handy little free utility) when the thought popped into my head out of the blue to see if I could also disable the on board sound in my Bios.
Doing that I reboot up, Let windows install only the drivers for the Live card , Set up my mic, log back into the game and viola. Runs perfect. Sounds are prefect. Vox is perfect...Ok maybe not perfect but damn close enough for an almost 10 year old card.
So Im back up and running normally again barring anything else happening.
What is still a mystery though is what caused the problems in the first place?
Was it the game?
Was it my machine and the switching back and forth from Miles to back again was just enough to bring my problem to the forefront in a straw that broke the camels back scenareo? And why I'd still be having problems with the on Board sound when there were no problems before?
I may revisit it in the near future, just to know.
In the meantime I'm just going to enjoy for a few days.
