Title: how to make your own skin?

I am trying to make a new skin but dont know how to do it. ive looked at help and all that but when i save skin and in the file that i save its just and image(bmp file) its just shows up as an image no file. if u have an answer plz tell me, thanks, 67COUGAR <S> all see you out there.
