Heya Pyro ... a little while back you said you were working to get one of these puppies outta 3DFX to do testing with and possibly fix the terrain tearing, map jumpiness, and swimming gauges problem with the 5500s. Any luck?

I run a v5 and have zero problems, using BETA driver from 3dfx.

Carl
Please tell us the driver file name and
where to get it...
Do you fly online with FSAA enabled...it doesn't seem to show up much offline..
Thanks....... (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

FWIW.....I talked to HT friday..and he said that there probably wouldn't be a fix for the blue line tearing problem with the voodoo5 with FSAA enabled.... (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)
Took mine back and got a geforce 2 from Creative and will see....
I really miss that FSAA quality.. sigh...
seeya up there....... (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

HT - if you're around, and the above is true, could you explain why? The Voodoo 5 5500 using FSAA looks just incredible, and I doubt I'll be switching to anything else (except maybe for the 6000) anytime soon.

I'm running it on win2000 , maybe thats why i have no problem.
-
hmmm...My joystick currently doesn't have a driver under Win2k, but I'll throw a different one on, and try it out in my Win2k boot. Thx carl
-
It's not a Win 2k issue. I have the same blue streak problem with 98SE. Very choppy game play with 4 or 2x FSAA in 32bit. 16 bit with 2x is not to bad. I am testing using a GForce 2 64mb from Hercules. The FSAA is great but I may go for the GForce or maybe tne NV70 when it is released. And remember after the V5 6k the Rampage is comming..... So many decisions to make!!!!!!
-
Now that I think about it , when i had my disk parted and was running AH in win98 there was this blue 'tearing' , especially at sunset and sunrise it was really apparent.
-
Hmmmm, so much for the support. I sold my V5500 on Ebay today for $217...ouch.
Whats the baddest card that WILL work with AH now ya think?
-
What was wrong with your card creamo? I have one ordered.
-
The FSAA is wacky in AH, and never heard if they were going to fix it. You gotta see WWII Fighters or Falcon 4.0 with it though. BEeeeeeutiful.
Im going to get a low end GeForce card for now or the ATI card so I have a DVD in my computer room.
Im just waiting for the new Voodoo6 card that needs to be plugged in! Me and SOB both.

Hblair...The problems that everyone has with the Voodoo 5 5500 using FSAA in Windows 95 and 98 are...
-Terrain tearing. Generally where to terrain angles meet each other, you'll see a thin blue line between the textures of the terrain. Doesn't happen 100% of the time, but more often than not, you'll see it.
-Screwy lines show up on map on clipboard. Just kind of wierd, not too much of a problem.
-Swimming gauges. The gauges on the dash sometimes look like they're floating around a bit.
The most annoying or noticeable problem is probably the terrain tearing. It gets less annoying with time, IMO, but is still quite noticeable, and I really hope it is fixed.
The only person I've heard that hasn't had these problems was Carl, and he is playing under Windows 2000.

Well toejam...sorry man! I thought in the thread that I linked, I noted the problems, but on further inspection I guess I didn't! D'oh!

NEW VOODOO DRIVERS 9/25/00 (http://www.3dfxgamers.com/drivers/voodoo5/voodoo5_win9x_new.stm)
-
Been running voodoo 5500 for about 2 months now. No problems at all- FPS anywhere from 20 to 100+ depending on scene. Tried GE force but it hosed the Saitek combo commands (delay in response) so I choose the v5500 over it. No regrets.

The Voodoo5 5500 does what it says it will. It provides FSAA 2x at 32bit color in AH with good fps as long as your using a fast cpu. It does have blue streeks at times but no other problems. If your using a slower cpu ie:600 or less your system will take a fps hit in hi res. I tried 8 cards from the V5 to the 64 mb gforce ultra. I'm keeping my V3 3k until the V5 6k and nv20 come out. I just might replace it if the results are what I want. Max res, at least 4x FSAA, 32 bit color and above 50fps.

The GF2 Ultra ain't out yet.

I bought a vd5500 last week,
looked and played terrific, 1024 x 768, 32 bit 2x fsaa= avg 38 fps.
Now with the latest patch, 1024 x 768, 32 bit 2x fsaa= avg 28 fps!
On line, there are pauses that render the game unplayable.
I've tried all the tweaking I can think of, can't seem to figure our why there is such a frame rate drop. Other games (fs2000, Fly2k) still run at the same fps that they used to, so I don't think that it is something that I did.
Anyone have any suggestions?
I could probably exchange the card, but it looks soooo good with fsaa on (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) !!! (except for aces high, where my old tnt2 card gets better fps)
Thanks

Did you d/l the latest drivers from 3dfx?
My frame rate may have dropped a bit, specially around the bases, smoke, furballs but it is more than playable.

Yes, I've tried both the new and old drivers.
PIII 600EB, 256k ram, voodoo 5
Aces high 1028 x 780, 28 fps????
Something must be wrong.
Even truning off fsaa does not help the frame rate anymore.
Thing is other games/ sims fps have not changed.
-
To eliminate the terrain tearing and map problems, try this:
I read on one of the 3dfx boards that the voodoo 5 is set at a maximum refresh rate of 75 mhz in its bios.
Download and install one of the refresh rate or overclocking utilities from 3dfx files.com: http://www.3dfxfiles.com/tweaks.asp (http://www.3dfxfiles.com/tweaks.asp)
Then through the utility, manually set the refresh rate to 85mhz for 1024x728, 32 bit color and see if this works for you.
I did for me (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

The only issue I have with it is it wont fit in my computer case. I originally bought it to upgrade my old PC, but I ended up purchasing a new PC. I ran AH in the new PC and I am getting frame rates that are just fine compared to my old machine. I tried to put the Voodoo 5500 into the new machine just to check it out and to my surprise, I found out that it wont fit. The AGP slot in my motherboard is level with the bottom edge of the drive case in my tower case...if that makes any sense. And the Voodoo card is too long to fit in the slot. So, if anybody is interested in purchasing one of these cards, I have one that I am willing to sell. I paid $285 for it. The box is open but it is unused. Anybody willing to make an offer?
